vehicles - total cost of ownership.

What with the electric cars and the bangernomics threads, I get the feeling quite a few people on here both don't like to throw cash away and, like me are probably anal enough to keep track of what their vehicles cost them.

If so, anyone care to share?

If possible, include/estimate;
- original cost of car to you
-number of years owned
- cost at sale (or estimated value now)
- spending on fuel
-spending on service/repairs
- spending on tax/insurance/finance

So, as an example;
My current car:
-2001 BMW 320d estate.

Based on all the bits I've calculated, it has cost me about £1900 per year, including depreciation and all that, doing 6000miles.
At 10,000mi it would be over £2500.

My partner's car (due for a change)
-2001 Peugeot 206 2l diesel.
About £1800 per year (6000mi)
£2400 (10,000 mi)

Toyota Surf 1996 3.0 turbo diesel.
Paid £1700 for it 8 years ago. It's had 4 new tyres at around £450, timing belt kit (needs doing again now) plus general servcing work, the head cracked so I replaced it with a new AMC one 6 years ago cost about £1200 with all the other bits I replaced while in there, a few cosmetic bits of interior. I can't think of much else. Oh its on it's second rear exhaust box!
It does 25mpg on a good run but I've no idea what it's doing around town...
Lovely to drive and is a real work horse! I'll not be selling it any time soon!

Defender 110 with 300Tdi on mud terrains...

Bought for £8.6k 10 or so years ago, currently insured for £16k (insurers value not mine).

Tax is whatever the current is in the ballpark of £240ish, insurance is £300ish. Does about 26mpg worst case. Annual service probably averages about £80 because I buy oils in bulk and do it myself. Unexpected breakdowns? Well this year has been bad (snapped two cranks) but has only cost be about £600 for two engines, redoing the timing belt and clutch each time .

Breakdown cover, a set of spanners in the boot I've had since I was 16 .

So probably not the cheapest but the 110 suits the variety of stuff I do. This weekend for example I've got the boot loaded up with stuff moving house and I'll be popping down to the south coast to pick up an MGBGT for a surprise for Dad and adding to the weight haul back to Wales

Don't forget to deduct the benefits from the costs to arrive at the true cost. E.g fares saved, not having to hire a man & van &c&c.

My last car was a Citroen XM estate that I paid £350 for but had to fit a new clutch , mileage was around 150000 ran it for 13 years and got 2 grand under the scrappage scheme when my wife wanted a new car. My present car is a 19 year old Astra estate ,cost £300 which I’ve had for 10 years . The kit car doesn’t count

Two Lancia integrales over the last 25 yrs - still got the second one.
100,000 miles in each. Average £5 a gallon. Worst mpg 8. Best, once only, towing low nose weight trailer - 25mpg to Norwich and back. Usually around 15mpg . . . I daren't work it out!

mine costs £258 / month...plus Insurance (about 200 a year) and Diesel....Ford Kuga 2 litre dielsel AWD Automatic....2 years old this month, lease is 3 years.

if i use my most use car/had the longest would be my vw scirroco
it origenally cost me £200
ive owned it since 2006
its estimated value now is about £4500
spend on fuel? i would say i get 350miles to a tank depending how you drive i used to up and down the m6 a lot so usually got pretty good mileage and i was doing 8000 miles a year average which has now dropped to 2500
service and repairs over the last 13 are in the £8000 mark now but thats including a respray, leather seats and a whole host of other parts over the years so realistically service items only looking around £3000
tax is £250 a year now but when i first had it it was £190 i think insurance has nearly allway fluctuated between £4-500 a year and obviuosly its not financed
according to the link in the first post its cost me £757.4 a year
i will do the van next

Volvo v70, bought 14 months ago 2100 euros, 2001 model diesel. Spent 800 euros sorting front suspension.
Let's say 3000 euros. Services by me, 50 euros per annum. 10,0000 miles per year (16k clicks.)

Bought 4 newish tyres from a scrappie on alu rims 120 euros. I fill her up every month 70 litres, about 90 euros per month.

Expecting to have to replace the 5 injectors next year for the every two year MOT, as of next month in France, any diesels must have the same pollution output as it would have been from NEW.

I don't in reality know how this will work, as 60% of the population run old diesels like me, who can't afford new cars. Possibly they will also go to scrap, and half the population will be carless. On top of that any corrosion which perforates, (holes), anywhere, FAIL.

This is obviously a governmental thing, to get rid of Smokey diesels, and encourage people to buy new cars, go petrol or electric.

Already, herds of vehicles with rotten undersides are being scrapped, which wouldve normally passsed.

Vehicles don't rust as badly here admittedly. My '96 clio got a clear bill of health, 1.2 petrol, bought 3 years ago, needs a service, must get round to it, 3 years not even an oil change. Changed a 4 euros exhaust rubber support. 4 tyres on rims and a s\h battery 120 euros. (Scrappie). Not great on short runs, good on long runs. Wifie uses for the school run and shopping. Any further, she takes my car, and I borrow the clio.

Admittedly the ventilation system is ********, heating ********, but it runs, always.

We also have a 96 pug boxer, been off the road, for a while, I've changed the front bearings, front brakes, just got to do the 'triangles', don't know what that's called in English. And it's got 4 minor points of corrosion which will be easily fixed. Oh yeah, the head gasket is iffy, needs doing, but it's a solid vehicle.

Oh yeah and wifies Volvo v50, which is waiting for the paperworK from DVLA.

Oh the joys of it.

Insurance:

All insured, third party fire and theft.

V70 30 euros per month.

Whether or not they are on the road in France, they have to be insured, you can't just cancel your insurance, as the mot failed. Only way to stop your insurance is to sell, or scrap. The logic being it they catch fire or are stolen you're responsible.

So the pub J5 camping car and V50 you can't see are still insured, but not moved for 12- 18 months.

I like to have spare vehicles, in case one unexpectedly brakes down. And a van for moving plastetboard and towing, family estates. Eff

The J5 camping car is sold next month to a mate who's off to Portugal with.

Bangernomics...... I think it's all the insurances which add up, as opposed to the bills.


Final word, I've not used a garage, for 15 years, always done my own work, last year had a bit of money bought my (lovely) V70 and the head of the shock absorber changed, No, the garage, started by changing both suspension things, same bangs, took it back, they admitted the top of one shocks was dead, and nearly 850 euros later, sorted. Admittedly I hate suspension, but could have done it for so much less.

Bought for £1k about 5 or 6 years back.
Costs me about £300 per year in parts.

I could probably flog it for £500 before the end of the weekend. Someone would drive it until the mot ran out and then break it for parts. 300tdi engines are £400 any day really.

Edit - I think we have done about 90,000 miles in it.

I keep a note of expenses such as service parts and any garage bills for work I don't/can't do myself, but no record of fuel, insurances etc etc - if I need petrol it goes in and I run it.

All vehicles are money holes. Some more than others. Depreciation? I don't generally expect to resell my vehicles, when I run them in to the ground, if they don't go to scrappie heaven, it's spares or repair, flogged.

Definitely bucks the trend to have appreciating things.

I had an old VW beetle ~ 10yrs ago. It probably cost less to run and increased in value compared to a more modern one. A way more tiring drive though.

Classics are tricky though. The wrong one can eat away any hope of appreciation profits in expensive repairs if it's actually used.

My snotty old Foden with over 1.6 million miles on the clock takes some beating, in over ten years other than service items and tyres its only had a brake drum replaced which cost £80. Still makes .5 on the emission`s and has always gone straight through its test. Off the road ATM because its needs tidying up and I really should upgrade but I dont think I can part with it. The best car for running around Iv ever owned. Best heater in winter and best air con Iv ever had. Will never sell it as I drive it hard when I want to and it never misses a beat. Was flawless in the snow too
