My mate has a 19 reg lwb transit,at 10,000,needed a new engine, dealer couldn’t get the head to seal, they suspected a warped block,he’s a very responsible driver with regards to mechanicals too.
Did they replace the engine quickly? - because it is rumoured in the trade - they are running short of engines from the Spanish factory for warranty work - and customers are having to wait months to get the vans back on the road. I don't suppose they planned on needing lorry loads of spare engines in their production forecast plan
They have increased the oil capacity on newer Euro6 transits to 9.8litres - fitted huge sump pans. We have seen a lot of low mileage - sub 40.000miles - eat the cam chain and upper cam carrier (so thus the move to higher volume of oil). But never an overheat problem - I think your mate was unlucky and this is why the dealer went for a repair.
They are selling these with 25.000 to 30.000 mile service intervals. Which is OK for the first owner when the van is under warranty - but it does not bode well for the next buyers down the secondhand chain
I declare longlife servicing to be the enemy for used vehicle buyers
