I built one of them once, we used the radiator as a ground, threw a length of magnet wire out the window fro an aerial and listened to quiet, crackly, crappy voices but I built it and it as awesome. I seem to remember it only worked at nightWhatever happened to the catswisker radio? first radio i ever built with a coil, catswisker and a variable tuning vane

the thing with old valve sets is if the speaker had been disconnected at any point the output valve will have gone
very true just thought it may have been transformer buzz amplified by the caseIf the buzzing is mains hum coming from speaker the output transformer & valve will be OK.
Is there a "gram" position on the wavechange switch? If so it needs to be changed to another position.
(well to the point the valves glow) and I hear a buzz but that's it.
are you sure that isn't a plug already in a socketLooking at the 2nd picture, I am not sure if I am missing something. Bottom right in 2nd pic (looks like a figure of 8 socket)
Would be spooky if I do hear Mr Churchill!
and make you jumpI like valve radios, they have a great sound. One of the main troubles is capacitors failing & on these old ones they can go pop literally.
Be aware that if poking around in it when plugged in there are likely to be serious voltages in the chassis ie 300 volts plus & fooling around can spoil your day!
the valve amp gives a warmer sound, have a look on ebay at valve amps for guitars even the small 50 watt amps go for good money where as you can buy a modern 120 watt cheaperI'm after an old valeve radio as I've heard they make great guitar amps and I've just finished welding up a three string cigar box slide. Well, steel rather than cigar box really..![]()
