I know not really welding as such but I need a little help...

Got my hands on this:

Does anyone on here have any experience of using this particular model?

I've had a play with similar ones in the past but just need a few spare parts to get it up and running, powder hopper, etc, and some advice on using it...

It appears to be in fully working order but until I get my hands on O2 and Acetylene I won't find out for sure...

Mainly for putting metal coatings down, like galvanizing, but can do aluminium and ceramics too.

Its not galvanising, its metal spraying, this will explain it for you,

There are some similarity with oxy-acetilene torch. You use both oxygen and acetilen, you hit the flame in the same way at the common o/a torch... But, there is a can/container of powder mounted on the gun, so when you pull the trigger the powder are coming out through the flame. We mostly use ss powders, nickel-base ones and iron-base ones. So, through the flame, solid metal particle, due to the heat, became pasty/molten one and hit substrate (metal to be coated). And it sticks to the metal. Please note there is no diffusion between particles and metal. Just adhesion!

THis metallisation (flame thermal spraying) is "cold process" because there is no diffusion and the temperature on substrate does not exceed 250C. It is excellent way to repair worn journals and places where o-ring or sealing packages damage some shaft. And this proces is mostly for rotational surfaces, not for flat ones. And do not worry, you cannot warp or distort the shaft. Therefore it is much, much better than welding for rebuilding some shaft.

With some special extensions you may coat holes too.

And this gun is the best ever made in my humble opinion. It is still made in Germany and there are spare parts and consumables/powders too.

But you also must have lathe and grinding machine. You must prepare correctly the place on the shaft on lathe (we say this is 90% of succesful spraying), you must allow turning of coated shaft for cooling in chucks on lathe, and when it is cold you must machine it by cutting tip on lathe or grind it to desirable dimension on grinding machine...

It can spray ceramic or oxide coatings too for high temperature relief of parts using either Aluminium oxide or a mix of Zirconium and Calcium oxides which can give refractory properties up to nearly 3000°C!!!

This uses "hot" deposition where the substrate gets up to 450°C or more depending on it's own properties...

I was planning on using it for this to give a few bits of my own work protective coatings...

Can be pretty much the same, if you change the nozzle and gases you can put plastics down too!!

I'm interested in the idea of ceramic coating cast exhaust manifolds. If you could find a way to put a ceramic coating on a Jaguar exhaust manifold that lasted more than 5 minutes you would be kept very busy.

Omniata, the type of ceramic coating Andy is talking about is on the outside of the manifold. I`d be interested in the same if you can do it, and have a spare manifold (hmm, in two pieces mind) if it works i could get you quite a few more to do, nice little earner maybe.

Was speaking to Andy about this before and am going to make a start on trials in the new year, looking quite hopeful... Going to start with Nickel coatings, then move on to Stainless if I can get the coating right.
I had a change of heart from the ceramics as they're either white or grey

But on the other hand if blacks a requirement then Nickel may be the best route as it darkens when oxides are formed at high temp, and it's got good corrosion resistance too...

The problem I have at the minute is getting a UK based supply of the powders and parts. I think Ibeda have started holidays early

Omniata i think the ceramic coating the guys are talking about is to stop heat transfer rather than corrosion resistance or aesthetic reasons.

But surely the black coating on a lot of the restored manifolds for the older Jaguars would emit more heat than prevent transmission, like a heatsink???
