Yeah the thing is Nicky your dead right in the respect that too much heat input effects the toughness of the joint I can't argue with that. But heat input isn't increased to that point via wire speeds and certainly not by turning them up because as welders we would compensate for doing that with travel rate and if we didn't we would have a much bigger problem on our hands than the properties falling below spec such as burn through and as BP said cold lapping, poor toe transition, LOF and both undercut depending on the joint, thickness etc etc.
you've got loads of knowledge mate and just like myself we all get the tiny details wrong I do it all the time. Every days a school day.
