How are you finding the Jasic? Im going to be on the look out for another big mig this year and have heard good things about the smaller Jasic sets but nothing on the big stuff. The warranty implies it must be good and for a fraction of the price of a lincoln speedtec 505 it seems too good to be true

New arc had a cracking deal on a 400A multi process unit with seperate wire feeder. 70% duty cycle on the thing, it looks bomb proof 2100 plus vat. Tom at welding supplies Direct sent me a leaflet with my new Gys 220 tig

I think the biggest set the do is a 450 and at that price I don't think it will include water setup

It's a multi process with lift tig and mma though
Can't find reference to a plain Jane mig of that size class though

Check this website http://www.jasic.co.uk/manuals-24-w.asp there's a 450s there but there isn't a 400 which is odd as that's the set I've got lol but Kent your right about the water cool being a extra pal

Nicky at 28 volts and 12mtrs a min Id expect to be more at the 300 amp Mark unless your using very small dia wire.

I got it kicking out 240-270 amps on 1mm copper coated wire so is there anything I can do torch angle wise to get amps up?

Shorter stickout (distance From tip to work) will bring the current up slightly but if it's already short you won't gain much.

These are some picks using spray arc on some 12mm plate and some 200x75x23 pfc, what do you think?

something I need to know ? don't you have to do a three pass weld on thick material like 10-12mm etc

Depends on the job really, if your machine dosn't have enough power for that thickness of plate, multi run welds will not stop LOF at the edges of the welds where it joins the base metal, welding cold is welding cold.
A full penetration weld is needed ie, route, fill and cap for heavy material
Multi run welds are now preferable to weaving but that in itself is no substitute for welding with the incorrect amperage.
Also too much amps is bad too since this has metallurgical effects on the base metal in the HAZ

Usually (not always) you'll have a welding drawing which specifies the size of the reinforcement needed. Design is key here. If a joint is subject to a tearing force away from a fillet joint then a multirun is put in to beef up the reinforcement deeming the force needed to break it to be higher. But it also goes deeper than this. By adding multiple runs you actually refine the grain structure in the welded joint which a finer grain is a tougher weld. I'm not sure Nicky that the higher amperages would really have an effect on the mechanicals, I know what your saying but the mechanicals are effected by heat input. By turning up the amps(wire speed) you naturally pick up travel speed which is the variable that best reduces heat input. The worst thing you can do is actually the opposite and go too low on the current because this in turn Forces low travel rates and silly things like weaving which increase heat input and reck mechanicals. If someone asks me how to reduce distortion with welding alone I say reduce heat input and pick everything up and go like the clappers.

Cheers rich. What I really meant to say was too much much heat from the machine cranked up way to hot causing metallurgical changes in the HAZ
Mean I have seen guys welding 1/4" plate with the machine dialled up at 350 amps.
That is risking putting a hell of alot of Heat into the job with negative metallogical changes in the grain structure

It's all about material thickness versus weld size versus parameters versus welding speed, this is one of the reasons why people are told not to use a weaving technique as that will increase the heat input due to slow travel speeds

I get that I am not that niave but what happens if he is travelling too slow with the juice turned up too high, are you not better to pick settings nearer that required for that material thickness and adjust your travel speed accordingly at that.. Otherwise let's all just turn our welders up full blast and forget about power settings

If the juice is too high and you are travelling to slow the chances are the weld size will be too big for the material thickness, you will get undercut and probably cold rolling which will result in lof on the bottom weld toe. Was only trying to offer some constructive advice

Yeah the thing is Nicky your dead right in the respect that too much heat input effects the toughness of the joint I can't argue with that. But heat input isn't increased to that point via wire speeds and certainly not by turning them up because as welders we would compensate for doing that with travel rate and if we didn't we would have a much bigger problem on our hands than the properties falling below spec such as burn through and as BP said cold lapping, poor toe transition, LOF and both undercut depending on the joint, thickness etc etc.
