Using propane in a butane torch

So, that's the question, in a typical plumber torch made to be used with butane, Can I use propane?

If it's a simple screw onto the cylinder type blowtorch, then no. Propane cylinder pressure is much higher than butane, so it will be hard to control the flame size, without it blowing out.

As above..if you use an adjustable regulator and lower the pressure then yes

Disagree butane torches work quite acceptably with an adaptor to propane or propene (mapp substitute)

Flame is on low for ease of photo but it burns well at higher flames too.

Now, question is why bother when you can get one of these for a fiver..
Edit: the one I got has gone up to 18 quid but the slightly less good version is 3 quid delivered ..

Not got a problem with Butane at all - it is only in the very cold that I want propane - as propane "boils off at lower temp" - gas transfer...

I was going to get a photo with my propane cyl but its near empty and the last few times I have had to dunk it in the warm washing up bowl to get any decent flame out of it, which I find odd given I can still hear liquid sloshing around if I shake it.

Perhaps this cheap toolstation propane bottle had some butane in it? Butane is liquid below 1c and rubbish vapour pressure below 15-20c.

Somone on her did claim toolstation propane bottles to be less good.

they will work but ideally you should have a pressure regulator, at room temperature butane is roughly 20psi, but at room temperature propane is roughly 105psi. psi.

On my Kasenit tub furnace, the inlet gas pressure is up around 65 psi on propane, and I just crank the air supply from the Alcosa twin chamber blower up as far as it can go.
On the shop air/propane torch, the mixture is adjustable on the torch hand controls quite subtly and effectively.
Mostly, I use that device for heating up crankcases for bearing fitment, and that sort of stuff....
