Using Heaters at work - Be Carefull

is it me of is there more problems nowadays with electric wires
im going back to old 3 bar electric fires with rubber old type covered wire or was it cotton covered flex
never seems to have any problems very good them old 3 bar fires that you could lay on there back put a kettle on the top or a pan a cook your dinner in the works cabin
and still keep warm
HSE would have a field day now
in fact my extension lead is rubber it's X MOD was 100 meters a lot shorter now must have a look at the spec is still visible on the wire in places

Back then everything was better, either that or we had no internet so you had to rely on Watch Dog to hear about that sort of thing.

christ i can rember when u plugged the iron ect in to a 2way adaptor on the ceiling light and turned the light switch on to use it our councill house got the electrics done. 3 double 13 amp sockets one on the landing one in the kitchen and one in the sitting room. before that there was one round pin 16 amp socket in the kitchen for a washer if u could aford one we had a poss tub at first and a mangle

I can remember the house where we lived till I was 11 having electricity installed. It only got lights and as above my mother used an iron plugged into a double adaptor on the light fitting. We had a ponch tub and mangle and a copper for hot water and the bog was across the yard. Cue the four Yorkshiremen sketch.

Our house must have been "posh" then, we one socket upstairs and one down!

I never use reeled up leads at work, all of mine are loose coiled with 32A plugs and sockets. Most of my plant is heavy for portable stuff (all 1.5-3.5kw motors) and apart from the lead melting it's bad for the armatures which are over a hundred quid a pop.

I do have a long reeled lead at home that I inherited from my dad but being probably 30yrs old it's a good quality thick lead type and I only ever use it for my battery charger.

I once watched a neighbour melt his reel while attempting to stick weld his car, 5 minutes later, the doorbell goes and he asked to borrow a lead, I couldn't remember where it was though

Very topical for me as only today i had a job to weld new hinges on some steel pub cellar flaps,
Manager asked why i ran the 50metre extension up and down the street several times.

you probably all know this... but even a top quality extention cable will probably end up doing this espicially if you draw that much current through them.

because its a "coil" it in effect causes it to become an induction coil and as many of you may know this is a the sort of process used on production lines to heat treat metals etc so it gets very hot

It does not become an induction coil because both wires are run together. The currents in the two wires are in opposite directions so they cancel out each other.

Now, welding cables do cause issues as they are separate and have high currents.

i just dont use extension reels full stop.

i just make up 10 mtr extension leads of 2.5 mm2.

also technicaly those 2 bar IR heaters should be on 32A plugs 2kw at 110v being just over 18 amps, mine ****** me off as it just trips the littel transormer out evry 5 mins as its crap, and the 5 kw one is heavy
