Using galvanized steel sheet for fume exctractor

Is it possible\safe to use galvanized steel sheet (~) to make a fume extractor hood for my charcoal BBQ?

Yes and no:

First of all, to weld it can be dodgy unless you grind away the coating and weld in a ventilated area, you could always rivet it of course, this would retain it's protective coating at the joints.

Secondly it should be and probably would be a distance from the coals not to heat sufficiently that it is affected enough to give off galvo fumes.

X2 with cumbriasteve, Riveting would be my preferred choice if possible, will definitely look better than grind,weld and touch up, Can't see heat from the charcoal being a problem.

As my initial intent was to weld it, after reading your posts, riveting would save me the hassle of grind, weld, touch up...
As far as i know, the zinc on the sheet melts at around 500 Celsius and evaporates at around 1000 Celsius.
Having the hood placed around 50cm above the BBQ at a minimum, shouldn't be a problem you say?

Actually the figures are about 420C and 900C (in pendant mode here), but it would have to be very close to the coals to be a prob and 50cm is way beyond that.

Out of interest, radiation (as in heat) works on a exponential rate. So raising the food to twice the height over the coals does not reduce the heat on it by half. It is much cooler. So the series of notches at even distances on most grills are pretty useless.
When I get the time, I will sketch up an alternative system that has worked well for me on numerous grills.
