Uses for a small 1ph. motor?

I`ve had this water pump motor (ex. Machine Mart) for some time now; the water bearing (mostly brittle-plastic) components have long-since passed away however, but the motor works fine and I just can`t bring myself to chuck it out.

It`s plated as: 1250 watts, 2800 rpm and counter-clockwise rotation as viewed from output shaft end.

Every time I look at it, I visualise a 230 mm. grinding disc mounted on the shaft, for use as a face-grinder/linisher.....but, perhaps there`d not be enough torque?

.....opinions on converting to that use (or suggestions for any other workshop purpose) very gratefully accepted.

1970?.....Good-grief!....it looks like I`m a bit "previous" in thinking this one`s been knocking about a`while already.

The shaft is 10 mm. dia...shouldered down at the end, with a 6.5 mm. dia x 20 mm. fine (metric?) thread.

It`d be nice to find a practical use for this motor; I hate waste and really like making 'something' out of salvage.

BTW: I did ask Machine Mart spares dept. for a price quote on the parts to replace the broken plastic internals (rotor and diffuser) of the centrifugal pump stage, which came to £101. +VAT.....about the same as an entirely new pump (including a motor!).....the economics of modern life eh!

Stick a fan on it and use it as a fume extractor for the workshop.

Try wiring a dimmer switch into it, then make yourself a rotary table for welding.
Ideally want a pulley on the end of the shaft, then a belt across to another pulley on the base of the table

No, it will vary the torque not speed. Will also likely burn up or be instable a s light dimmers are not designed for inductive loads.

Nope, the speed is determined by the frequency not voltage.

A dimmer doesn't alter the voltage, it chops it up so it isn't there all the time, thus a light appears dimmer because it is effectively being switched on and off quickly.

Is it possible to alter the speed of a single phase job? Thought it was only on 3 phase motors hence the new wave of Variable Frequency Drives available.

I don't see why you shouldn't use a variable frequency device for a single phase motor, providing the voltage and current outputs are Ok.

Nope. Not on an induction motor, a potentiometer will alter the voltage, you need to alter the frequency.

Advice of leaving it in a corner to wait for use is a good one. This motor sounds great to convert a 3phase drill press to a single phase machine or something similar. I'll put a reduction box on it if you want to run it slower. Synchronous motors need very specific electronics to control the speed.

Look on the bay for a single phase VFD (variable frequency drive), there should be some available or look on rswww.com find a suitable one then try a local electrical supplies to see if you could get a deal...
For the motor itself, do you have any sort of projects which require motorisation? other than that have a look around the internet for various weird and wacky ideas...

onenastyviper is right - you will need a variable frequency inverter to control the speed (I used to work for a company that made motor drives)
