On the other hand, I think it’s a wonderful place. I believe a day trip to Merseyside is on the cards to collect a piece of machinery

If you ever see one of theses Armstrong indexable tool holders grab it and run, they're very hard to find but not too difficult to make on your new shaper, have fun.

at one point you couldn't give them away and sold for peanuts roundabout100 quid . I could have bought a beauty medium sized one last year for £150 . but have no need . there has been a rise in -popularity recently probably due to ebay and a wider ordnance and are fetching big money

She'll understand when you show her how, with a suitable adaptor, a shaper can be used to work a Tirfor winch all day long....

Wise words in that last link gaz1, unlike with expensive milling cutters, it pays not to overthink and get hung up on tool grinds. Just go with what works for you, if it don't work in the first few strokes, try a different feed rate, if that's no good regrind and have another go..

I am surprised that no one asked about the holes. They were drilled and reamed on a rotary table, My shaper table is not long enough for a dividing head set horizontally. Used a Starrett square head level to level across dowels inserted into the holes. Then turned the holes off. Just passing along the idea,maybe help Someone out of the hole they are in.

i havent got there yet but have been buying tools for it decided to take advice from there and reduce to the 1/4" hss bit
im on the last few tools for the shaper machine and then its a homemade gear cutter to build up for a hand shaper
I would just like to add that I have used a carbide tipped round nose lathe tool very successfully in my shaper and other than a quick touch-up on the green grit wheel, have never had it chip. I had to make a load of long pyramid spikes to match some that weren't available from any of the usual suppliers. To speed things I put four pieces of 1" square bar side by side in the vice and set to. Obviously, the first and second sides were continuous cuts but then the other two become intermittent cuts but I never had a tool chip. Perhaps I was just lucky.Wish I had a photo of them as it was one of the most satisfying jobs ever. At the time I couldn't have thought of a better way to make them but this was a good few years ago and now it would be off to the man with the CNC.
Gaz1, Yes, clapper does lift. I was warned about chipping the tool but the cuts with a HSS tool were too small and I needed to remove a lot of metal hence I tried the carbide tipped tool and was pleasantly surprised at the amount I could take off in a single cut. No damage to the tool so I've just carried on using them. I would however add that these were just round nose tools and I've not tried any other shape. Have to agree with the comments about the swarf - gets everywhere. It's almost as bad as those half moon pieces from sheet metal nibblers.
