I have been out of IT for a few years but still keep my hand in on our own servers. Virtualisation is great. Just set up a new server running Hyper V - then running 4 of our old servers on it.

As power consumed is largely turned into heat, I'd be surprised if a PC could produce the same kind of heat output as a 1.5KW fire and manage to expel it without toasting itself
I know it's not an exact comparison
my brother is a gaming addict - I used to be - just don't get the time! He runs 2 of the latest high end cards along with the best cpu and motherboard. He has 4 drives - 2 of them ssd. He has a high quality 700w supply.
You are right though - they do generate plenty of heat - but not all the time - just when they are working hard.
They have huge coolers on them these days - many are watercooled.
These are older cards - latest is the 1080 - just to give an idea of scale.
Graphics cards are actually better at number crunching than the fastest CPUs - hence why they are used by bitcoin miners or for running complex equations.

800w is where I aimed last time round. 6hdd
4x260mm fans. 6x100mm fans 2 beefy gpus in sli can't see why you would need 1500w overkill coz gamers think bigger is better.
a decent 800w modular power supply is what il be Investing in next time.

I used to imagine that data centres would one day be set up with water cooled kit. As someone involved with managing the airflow around these places, it made so much sense. Never seemed to be on anyone elses agenda unfortunately.

I remember reading about a project using hundreds (maybe thousands?) of G5 Mac's in a data centre as an experiment, they are water cooled as standard so I assumed they would use some sort of header to connect them all up, however they were installed with air conditioning ducts to cool the air

I bought a "re-furbished" Dell Optiplex in a small format (about 30x30x10cm), large monitor, new keyboard lots of power and memory - like new. Runs Fusion 360 no issues - all for about £100. High electricity costs doesn't really matter (At least for now) as my leccy is included in the rent, which is so high I'd feel silly not abusing it
. The noisy fans would be an issue but it would be fun trying to convert it to watercooled, maybe even machine some parts myself. Sounds like the biggest problem then is the poor video, I've only had a quick look but graphics cards seem to be really expensive so it looks like I'll just go for a normal desktop.

Unfortunately gpus are expensive whichever you go for. Just bought a second hand gaming rig no gpus for £160. Not to shabby. Amd a10 5800k 4core 4.2ghz
Slapped a £30 gpu in it that will crossfire with the on board gpu and got a 80% increase In performance. Not as good as the old rog but All my current games are 5 plus years old so perfect for my needs. Few years down the line il build a new rig but for now it's a cheap way back onto gaming.

watched a documentary about google data centers - they set the servers up inside shipping containers they could drop into place and then connect up from there
the idea being they're modular so they can easily add extra as/when needed
the containers were all water cooled - but they were really just using it to cooling the air in the container
I read about another data center where the back doors to the server cabinets were actually large water cooled radiators... so as hot air was expelled through the door from the servers it was cooled
(I've been water cooling since I was a kid, but a bit out of the loop now, no free time!)

Yes, they just don't ever seem keen to ditch the fans for some reason. Probably a combination of extra complications in design/maintenance/service and a reluctance to mix electrics and water.

We “upgraded” one of our customers historian servers to a HP proliant version, (was about the size of 4 standard tower PCs pushed together).
I asked them where they wanted it fitting, the guy said “oh the network connection to the plant system is under my desk” - we had a bit of a laugh when we saw the size of it, was a bit of a squeeze but we managed to get it under ok (their old historian was a standard desktop).
He didn’t seem so amused when we powered it up for the first time and all the fans kicked in sounding something like a 747 taking off right under his desk
Luckily it’s only used as a historian data collection machine so is not exactly overworked and the fans never actually kick in other than at start up!!

This is what you need - mineral-oil cooling (mineral oil is non-conductive, so the entire motherboard and components are dropped into the oil)
