The rubber belt type, not built from metal pieces. I've been offered half a dozen of them, most likely worn out and not worth the cost of shipping.

They look too useful to dump. They could make a useful raised bed in the garden, or possibly paths over the peat.

Any other suggestions?

They are a bit of a lump on the bigger machines,tracks from three tonnners and under would be more than managable for one guy or a HD chick. You won’t have to pay for them, any plant hire company would be glad to be rid.
A bigger track laid out would make a garden pond, throw a bit of soil around the inside and a bit of polythene and your done.

Are you just going to end up taking on someone else's waste disposal/recycling obligations?

Great if you have a genuine useful use to repurpose them but seems like a potential pain to properly dispose of.

Unlikely to be a problem, they belong to a mate. My taking them and possibly giving them back later merely defers the problem for him.

I remember tire tread sandals being the "in thing" back around 1963 or 64. They were Surfer Sandals, and had brass rings on the top and sides.
