USA Customs fees - word of warning

Just to mention,

If you sell an item to the USA and want to send it via Royal Mail then YOU have to pay the import duty and handling fee when sending.

Not sure if any other carriers are the same?

Cos tariffs. Not sure that this is new news - many carriers are now not sending small items to the USA at all.

So it's definitely not Royal Mail's fault.

I knew about tariffs but I didn't expect to be paying them myself!

DPD seem to be doing it the way I would expect, Bill the recipient before delivering the item. That's how its always worked with import fees I thought.

Royal Mail are only doing pddp by the look of it.

Not sure if my buyer was wise to this as they asked me for a total price using royal mail specifically. It was only a low value item so I've paid the fees and sent it anyway but something to be aware of..

The limit is now $100/~£75 for items marked as gifts, anything over that or under but marked sale of goods requires a 10% tariff which has to be paid upfront so either you pay it and charge higher postage or if the item is low enough value for the $100 just mark it as a gift and you only need to pay the 50p handling charge. Worked for me when I sent 120+ parcels last month for my climbing device.
