max rpm is not that great they have a rev limiter in the rotor arm, how fast do you want a hairdryer to run

Not interested in the motor realy only what a beetle gearbox runs at

Dont know whether this info will be usefull or even correct but I read somewhere that beetle engine/transaxle can be run back to front like in a old lotus style mid engined race car (engine in front of gearbox). I think the differential is swapped round so the crown wheel is on the other side of the pinion gear.
So what do you need to know for?

What flavour beetle is it? Gear ratios and final drive varied over the years with engine size... reckon on somewhere between approx 3500 - 4000 rpm @ 70mph if the overall tyre diameter is preserved at ~ 25"

Type one/three transaxles can be made to work 'backwards' for mid engine applications by 'flipping' the ring and pinion as said. The first weak point usually encountered when the engine's been tuned/swaped is the side plate(s) which hold the ring and pinion in mesh- beefier versions are available

There are larger versions that can be fitted to the VW gearbox.

I destroyed 3 beetle boxes with a hopped up 2180cc VW engine, I wouldn't want to strap that to it!

Well I can put you all out of your misery.

The reason I asked was I found a Hand start 1943 flat 4 Cub diesel engine on t'bay. For 175 quid. And thought that would be ace in a trike, using a beetle box setup.

But after talking to the guy (very little info on web) its only 9bhp. So a none starter. Never mind like I needed another project, like hole in the head

Lotus used to sell the bell housing to join a VW box to a Ford, along with the shaft to mate the clutch. I bought a set for a mid engined project, but sold it to a friend, along with the VW box for his Turbo Volvo powered auto-cross project. Very successful, except the box split across the diff housing due to the power. He got another and set up clamps to relieve the loads, using threaded rods to reinforce the box. Worked, until he could afford a Hewland.

CardiffRob,is that one of those old Lycoming APUs? Were popular to convert for homebuilts.
And, curious, what is your VW powered a/c?
