UPVC Framing for Existing Glass Units

I've got two double glazed units that a mate gave me for my shed. I was going to make wooden frames by rabbeting some stock but it's just going to be really time consuming so I thought I'd see what the double glazing firms round here would charge to do one.

After checking around, they seem to be buying both in together so prices are too much to justify for a shed. I know a few members do or have done glazing so was wondering what the going rate would be for these units:

546 x 843 x 27

No opening required just a very basic frame. Two needed.

Perhaps worth checking what stock your local upvc sales have, we have one with everything from large dimension angle to small quadrant and the prices are good.

Make the frame from say 50 x 50 x 10 angle, silicone the panel in and finish with some 25mm quadrant, easier than wood and would look the part when finished.

Knowing what our supplier charges (I buy a fair bit) the cost would not be much above £20 for material

Sadly the glazing unit is the cheap part of the assembly... but if you don't want openers then bodging something together out of timber, alu angle or diy store pvc extrusions with car trim tape and silicone is ridiculously easy. I've even framed stuff up using pieces ripped from offcut square white upvc guttering and downpipe.

don't you have a circular saw ? you could just set the blade depth and pass the timber through a few times to create the rebate, knock the frame up and pin some internal beading on job done wouldn't take very long at all, but don't use silicone on a wooden frame, you cant paint it

Afraid no pictures, last window I did was a year ago.

Basically you have the double glazed unit, you mitre cut the angle UPVC profile to make a frame around the unit.
Stick each side on with silicone and that will give you a picture frame effect, then finish off with some UPVC quadrant on the inner surface of the glass, it ends up very strong and waterproof.

Ive done exactly the same for a workshop build im plannign this summer. Got given two sealed glass units that were the right size, time is free for me so i knocked up a couple of frames with some 4x2 i had lying around and some old window sill. I made frames, cut rebates, fit glass and then applied stop bead.

If you havent got a router you can get around it by makign a frame around the galss and then using some quadrant or skinny architrave to make the internal and external stop beads.

I have a big tilt and turn window glazed here as a freemans its off to the tip shortly. best thing is get a frame that fits or a wall that can be altered by the full brick only like this one (removed from a job)

Brother in law is foreman of a window manufacturing company. He says glass is cheap so they buy that in made to exact size, even if non standard, as they make all their money on the frames (and fitting).

Its good to have a foreman who understands so much about costs and the business Glass itself isn't too expensive sure the pricey bit is everything else that turns it into a d/g unit, its like the UPVC profile cheap until you have paid all your staff, premises etc.etc. The only way you can mark up fitting enough is in the boss mans imagination by crikey those guys can bring in uncalculated extra costs to the job

Profit margin net stood around 5% during the UPVC boom time, when turnover was massively higher than today and centred around more profitable domestic work in volume. Mind you that isn't too shabby when we had very small companies with only one little showroom and an advert in the local rag turning over more than a million PA.

yeah, it was new in when I took it out. Totally wrong for the house, put in by the previous owner just prior to us buying the place and knocking things to bits
