i am using a old clarke 90en with gassless wire in it for little jobs out and about and i have no problems with the swan neck or torch to be fair even with the gassless wire it works ok
Ah ... so ,, where does the Clarke 160TE fit in the pantheon of DIY crapness? I got mine second hand over ten year ago. It's still going although it looks worse than the cars I'm welding up with it. It was transformed by a PTFE wire liner , but the 'spring' thingy in the goosneck, despite being replaced , pretty much always causes the wire to snag if I get a blockage or feed a new wire. If I ever have to refeed it, i have to take the torch to bits, feed the wire through the brass block , then put the gooseneck back on. Been doing it that way for years!!! Is it woth upgrading with a new torch? Machine mart seem to have rather glorious ideas about parts prices. I think I enquired about a new torch once and nearly soiled myself. What's the recommended uppgrade route ( No I can't afford a new machine ) :-)
I just always assumed that using the Clarke machine was as good as it gets.... should I really be saving for something better...for welding up knackered classics?
Also .'Industrial standard wire ? Really, I had no idea....is the machine mart stuff rubbish?
Ahhh....that old record's stuck again....can someone give it a nudge please?

Really? Funny that, you've never said. Its up to the individual if they prefer a DIY type machine with cheap wire feed mech etc. I have used both and prefer industrial machines, but am sure the DIY ones suit a lot of end users perfectly, and there is no need whatever to spend more money on something more suited to commercial use.
I have got to go with Woz on this one.I repair some of the best equipment money can buy,I have learnt that the forum looks after people that are genuine and their budget could be high or low,we all look after each other.Really? Funny that, you've never said.
You're the type of person who if he thinks it's not good enough it isn't good enough, I bet you've had very little or no first hand experience of cheaper machines whereas many, many of our members get on perfectly fine with them.
SorryThat was in response to Chris's post, not yours Carl.
