Upol Raptor minimum viable quantity?

Im considering using raptor for some of my little metal box things.

Typically, i use a gravity spot repair gun, and, say, 350ml will do two coats on, maybe, ten boxes (i should pay more attention really, but close to that)

Ive never used raptor, and would want the stippled effect (ie schutz gun)

1 ltr is more than id need in one go, i reckon. I mean i guess it goes on way thicker - ive just looked up and 1ltr is supposed to do 3sq mtrs. I cant actually work out what a litre of 2k is supposed to do, but im guessing multiples of that?

...so maybe 1ltr would give me the same as 350ml of normal 2k?

If not, what's the best way of dealing with this? Can you buy clean empty schutz gun bottles? Google returns this thread, which implies not!

So, maybe, first time, tip half the product into something else, and then mix up? Im thinking any less than half a ltr, and ill get so much wastage in a suction gun that it wouldn't really be worth it anyway?

What do you think?


Id be going over alloy, so it would be epoxy primered if that makes any difference to anything?

Just watching videos, and this chap sprays with a gravity gun, albeit, with a much larger tip than mine -

I might just get some and dial down the pressure as much as it will go and spray with a rubbish gun and see what happens.

empty some into a clean tin/jar then use the shutz can , clean it out afterwards and save for next time

be aware the hardener wont last forever ..maybe a year once opened if youre lucky

if its a small job you could also use the shutz gun in any random container /pot...doesnt have to screw on to work

I think I need to have a play about and see what sort of results can be had.

Is there somthing special about the makeup of raptor? I mean it's said to be tough but is it basically just the same as any other 2k paint, just laid on real thick?

(What I'm wondering is if similar can't be achieved with normal 2k if no thinners are used and the it's run through a similar gun - or if, indeed, the raptor stuff is a different chemical?)

no you wont get the same effects with 2k paint ...its much thicker

Possibly, I've never used either of them so have no idea!

Does the stone chip stay rubberised? I think I read somewhere that it hardened up eventually?

What my motivation is -

The end price of these does not justify the level of work required to get a sports car gloss finish.

Matt seems to mark easier than gloss.

I was wondering if I couldn't go over them with a textured finish and that would be that?

They're indoor items, but the raptor finish would give a visual difference to the usual powdercoat that sensible people would use.

Or I just get on and build a powder oven. I've got most of the parts for it currently. Powder would be cheap and easy and get the job done.

overpaintable stonechip dries hard , i guess it has some flex to it but i wouldnt say its rubbery , the bituem underseal stays soft you dont want that

Gravitex stone chip is a rubberised single pack stone chip which is over paintable.

May be another option as available in 1l bottles.

Or apply with a paint brush/roller,
Then stipple with sponge or brillo pad.

As said use a 4” foam roller and it gives a nice finish

personally I’d buy a cheap gun and mess about with gun and air settings

the lower the pressure the heavier the orange peel

google powder coat crackle black, whilst you can wet spray it the powder coat looks a much more even finish

do you need the rock hard finish that raptor gives ? you can get texture aersol cans for bumpers etc , some of those give a rough finish

Its for more of the same stuff that i generally do. I posted the photos below the other day.

The job in the photos is in gloss, but the items sale price isnt really high enough to go to all the bother, so, what i figure is, epoxy them (the one in the photo is steel, but most are alloy) spatter on a load of raptor, and job done.

The whole "bed liner" toughness line would, possibly, be a good sales pitch, and the textured finish would be cool in the application also.

What, with powdercoat?

Im (slowly) setting up for powder. As in ive got a scrap oven here, and all the PID control, and found a gun i want etc. I just need to build the oven itself, and find a blast cab (i have a blasting pot) - so im kind of a lot of the way there, but still some work to go.
