Upgrading from a Super 7

I am looking at upgrading from my trusty super 7 to something a little larger. The Super 7 although works brilliantly is worn in places and needs a regrind, by the time I’ve spent £500 on it I might as well sell it as is and put it towards a larger lathe. Any suggestions on what to look for? I have 3phase, it needs to be under 2m in length, I was thinking Harrison M250 possibly?

I have around £4000 to spend and due to my location it would have to come from a machine tools dealer - am I likely to get a decent machine for £4K?

I would hope so, I went through a similar process from ML7 to M300, the M300 ended up costing me around £2500.

To do any work on a machine, first you need to hold that work. So the workholding devices that either come with the machine as sold or that are on the market for subsequent purchase may make or break the deal.

Myford 254 and M250 are D1-3 and chucks in that size are relatively expensive. Hardinge uses, I think, a 2 degree taper which uncommon.

The most popular taper used on modern, import machines seems to be D1-4, so chucks and collet systems in this format are the most economic due to supply and demand (compare and constrast with L-taper stuff).

i got a Harrison and kept the myford both have there uses and i use both

a bit longer than you want... but make it fit? save £3300 in the process?

keep the myford too, for working on small stuff

a couple of months ago there was an eBay add for a whole room full of Hardinge lathes I think it was 8 lathes in total for £2000 you had a week from sale to remove all if only I had the space
