Upgrade to Windows 11

Here is the system:




PC Health Check tells me I have two things to address before upgrading to Windows 11:

1. TPM 1.2 installed, TPM 2.0 needed.
I’ve been through the BIOS and there’s no hidden TPM 2.0. Can I just buy any old TPM 2.0 module and plug it in, good to go?

2. CPU not approved.
How rude. It’s fast enough (>1Ghz) and has enough cores (>2, mine has 8) but is not on the approved list. Similar question, can I buy another one (which one?) and just bolt it in? Does anyone have one lying about that’s about the same spec?

1. Unless your motherboard has a TPM header where you can install a new one, you're out of luck and have to buy another motherboard.

2. Yes, you can just buy a new CPU, take out the old one and stick the new one in, but it's more involved than just that. It's strange that it won't accept your totally capable existing one, but it might be because you're a few years past end of service though, so it isn't considered new or secure enough.

I personally would not go to all the money and effort for the dubious privilege of having Windows 11. I'd either stick with 10 despite support ending or look into Linux.

If you really want Windows 11, I am only familiar with AM5 motherboards and CPUs, but you will be futureproofing yourself for quite some time if you go with them.

HP does provide a utility that enables TPM2 on your workstation, (bios dependant) however not sure you can also find a suitable processor that will support win 11.
i upgraded my xeon pc from win 10 to linux (just straightforward Ubuntu) and have been very happy, no plans to use Win 11. but your software requirements will determine if thats a path you should follow. I have simple word processing/spreadsheet and photo processing needs so i was very happy with linux alternatives.

Having seen the number of issue highlighted by youtube videos with W11 "updates", I'm not at all sorry to have given it a miss. I upgraded my laptop not long ago for something with a tad more oomph for video editing. I bought a bigger ssd, swapped out the W11 one that it came with and installed Ubuntu. Works fine. No hassles with failed updates, nags about not having a M$ account ( I did check out the new machine with W11 but got it going with a local account only) and no BSOD.
Out of interest, I tried my old W10 laptop with Linux. Less that 30mins had it up and running.

Get yourself a Linux distro on a keydisk and try it out. You never know, you might just like it!

dont try. either carry on with win10 with a good antivirus and firewall package installed after defender support ends, or use one of the many methods of installing 11 on non tpm2 systems.

To save time you could just search windows 7/10 and replace 7 with 10 and 10 with 11, this has all been covered during that upgrade saga

Just counted, I have 4 laptops, 2 desktops and a mini pc all happily running 11, one of the desktops is a chinesium Xeon without a tpm and the media was created with Rufus, installed and updates just fine

Winaerotweaker is good if you want to turn stuff off.
I added a local account to a laptop today, not sure why the internet is full of folk saying you can't, it required no tweaking or fiddling

For 2) Its not just speed, the cpu is missing some instructions inside in its instruction set because its not 8th gen or newer, and missing POPCNT amongst others. There's hacks and workarounds to defeat the checks but eventually Microsoft will put something in using these missing instructions just to spite people doing it this way.
Also isnt that cpu in a lga 2011-3 socket? if so, I dont believe there's alternative cpu's that will fit that socket size that are supported. Again you can bypass the checks with some work but the real fix is a new motherboard.

I think the best upgrade is to stay on windows 10 with a supported av once defender support finally goes away.

got fed up with window's (think XP was the last system we had) and went apple.....
2x27" Macs, 3 laptops (1Pro), 1iPad and 3 modern phones of which are less than 2 years old....
the only reason to change the iPad is the battery needs charging twice most days....
we DO NOT game......
So for the pad, I'm waiting for the new copy from Starlink provided it's comparable....think it'll be around £300......
Plus will buy the new Starlink phone just for fun.....next year release, same as their pad.....

I wont talk about provider's but looks like we'll be getting 2 new starlink systems this winter when our presant contracts run out...

There has been a big uproar over this.

Depending on whom you listen to or read a while back Microsoft softened their insistence and requirements and allowed Window users to migrate to Win 11 without the need for new hardware.

Some were lucky and managed to do so.

However MS stance has hardened, nope!, want Win 11, upgrades are required, can't do so, tough, consumers problem, not ours.

The thinking behind the original backtracking was simple, MS realised overnight or at least by December of this year, ( 25 ), overnight they are going to render millions of PCs/Laptops without security updates for Win 10.

There is some hope MS will soften again near it's deadline,--maybe, maybe not, I think not but talk about MS shooting themselves in the feet.

MS have been banging on about their requirements for some time for Win 11 but human nature being what it is people will leave upgrading their OS till the last moment, come December panic when they can't but it's not necessary as Win 7, XP and especially Win 10 on older PCs/Laptops will still work, just possible without further security updates.

Lots of info about on the internet/YT about how to circumvent MS Win 11 OS requirements, most won't work on older PCs/Laptops and never could unless your PC hardware was compatible and just required reconfiguring.

I wasn't so lucky but then my own built PC was around 10-11 years old, chugging away happily but humming loudly and I was perfectly happy with Win 10.

Earlier this year I rebuilt it with advice from a PC forum, ( things had moved on a tad and I was way out of touch on these things and what was available within a budget of £200.

MY PC case was good along with my PSU, SSDs but MB, CPU had to go as did the Ram if I wished to install Win 11 and keep reasonably secure.

Most new MBs, ( and CPUs ), can only utilise DDR4 ram and up, not DDR3 or older which I suspect yours might be.

So it's not just about TMP 1. 2. A rule of thumb, most new PC/Laptop MBs 3 years or younger just have to be configured, if at all, to upgrade to Win 11 without the need for rebuilds.

In my case I rebuilt using most of what I had but got super Amazon deals on RAM,CPU,MB, couple of other bits, all for £227, so not to bad.

Yes I do think it's a cheek MS assumes, if your PC/Laptop is that old, you should replace it anyway but I guess all OSs have a end of use life and sometimes upgrading--well--will require upgrading PC hardware.

Funny thing is while I can migrate to Win 11, I haven't done so.

On the brightside, I have a faster PC, clean inside--for now and bejaysus, cor', whisper quite, that took a a day or so of getting use to.

Writing of upgrades/updates I'm kinda having a similar issue with my cell phone and its Android version, I cannot update some of the apps due to the version, there are some workarounds but eBay and a couple of others, thanks for friggin nothing!

A Linux distro is a great alternative but if you want Win 11 or you hand is being forced a bit, you might well have to bite the bullet and upgrade your PC hardware.

I am being hassled by Fusion who will kill the Windows 10 version in October. I really do not want the downgrade to 11, but it seems as if I will have little choice.

Lots to unpick there… I’m happy to stay with W10 Pro but it’s whether things like Fusion will continue to work.

@Mark 5 I have DDR4 RAM, so could upgrade the MB and CPU only. Which MB, and how do I know it’ll fit? I bet they’re not standard sizes.

I hate windows 11…..so now use my Mrs Mac book for pc type stuff, and surf on an ipad, they just seem to work, no mucking about. Obviously a premium is paid for that!
I do still use my old work laptop with windows 7 pro works just fine, but obviously no security type updates etc, but still working fine. I bought a new laptop last year from Dell decent spec too….windows 11, just cant get the hang of it, does my head in, its just sat collecting dust!

i will admit windows 10 and 11 is so full of junk nowadays compared to the early days of windows xp and windows 7 vista being the worst it makes me glad to have come across other versions of windows xp and windows 7 that had stripped out versions

PC Part Picker is a good website, @Guineafowl. You can add the parts you have and only compatible parts will be shown. The forum there is very helpful as well, with dedicated areas for people to post their budgets and requirements, with commenters providing their 'builds' that satisfy them. Alternatively, if you have a local computer shop they'll likely be very helpful, and it saves poring over acres of incomprehensible text and model numbers. If you want a just 'a computer' then CEX is my new favourite place. Their guarantees are excellent, and the prices not dissimilar to eBay but with a lot more peace of mind. I've bought many secondhand components, with two replaced under warranty, like for like, the same day. Just take it into the shop, they test it and if it's faulty as claimed they'll replace it.

Equally, I have put W11 on several 'incompatible' computers including a 2011 laptop with no problems. I build my own PCs and only use local accounts rather than Microsoft ones (yes, that's a workaround too so it is not required to have a Microsoft account) since I use my computer like it's 2005. My only complaint about W11 is that I really liked the UI of W8, and it doesn't have the fullscreen start menu option which I thought was brilliant on today's large screens. Functionally, you'll notice very little difference, and the Artificial Stupidity can all be turned off. Windows Tweakhound has an excellent guide for W10, which is mostly applicable to W11.
