What really gets me is that this stuff isn't near the road and cannot be seen from there, but since a 6 cylinder Triumph block "went" they keep coming back and looking for anything that's going and unless they are caught red handed nothing can be done.

They're probably just interested in anything made of metal that can be wieghed in

i did a callout to a house and the scrotes had cut the main earth bond cable in the cabinet outside it was 6inch long and 10.omm in size. worth about 5 pence scrap. the damage cost the housing £80 and put the tennant at risk

A sprinkle of granules from a pot of drain tracing dye would mark their hands for days, if you could put it where the rain couldn't get at it. Then they really would be 'red handed'.

i have an old compaq pc in my garage its a p4 1800 cpu , 1g ram 200gb harddrive i fitted pci dvr card for £25. two cctv camera £57 each and two 10m cables £5 each it has been running for three years + now total £150.00

Agreed, dobermans are suspicious animals and tend to be wary of new/strange people etc, very good guard dogs if you get the right ones imo.

As for smart water, cant they just soak their hands in petrol to get it off ?

They won't know they've been "infected" watching some of the police programmes it gets onto clothing, on the face, in the hair etc.

I pre-record my own messages , different for my back and front doors (2 channel) and even when I'm drunk, hearing my own voice telling me that the garage is being burgled seems to sober me up quite quickly.

The delays can be customised to suit and it can call several numbers. There is also an audiable alarm but I chose to disable this, I'd rather any intruder think that they have plenty of time. Then, it's up to you who you choose to call in terms of police / thuggish mates etc.

In response to the OPs question(most of the replies mentioning cameras were about wired CCTV cameras),NO they arent easy to set up.I ran my own computer shop and thought I was pretty good until a friend asked me to install one of these in his garage premises so he could watch it from home.The problem basically is due to the pidgeon chinese instructions,after I worked my way through it I translated them into easily understood English and now wouldnt hesitate to do another.If you dont have a fixed IP address(most people dont) you will need to find a site that gives you a dynamic IP address.Once installed and working theyre great(make sure you keep updating the site that gave you the dynamic address),you can control it from wherever you are in the world,record etc through motion sensing.

if you have a router that is worth more than 99p it should have a setting to add one of many websites, such as dynDNS. The router will tell the website when it has been updated.

IP cameras are ****, you need to think about the range of your network, you need to make sure you have more than decent security on the network and keep the router well away from a window.

smart water is good, but useless when your bits end up at the other end of the country, fitted to a new car and sprayed.

getting a big dog is good, but so is a big bit of steak for it chew on while they get on with robbing you blind.

I would go for a wired camera linked to a PC or DVR. and IR sensors linked to an alarm, make them high enough to stop cats setting them off.

Currently thinking I'll go for a couple of good quality hard wired cameras well up in the air and a DVR with a link to my mobile. That probably means getting a smart phone so I can see whats going on. (Another new toy )

Been here since 1982 and, except for the break-in, we have only had bits and bobs lifted over the years, all petty stuff (even had a hosepipe on a roll pinched once!), which is bad enough. Location is on the edge of a village so we have neighbours and we all keep an eye out for each other, hence the recent warning. The neighbour, biggish lad, did suggest that they went of in short jerking movements.....

Its just there are some scum who work the area for scrap, and anything else they can get their hands on if the opportunity is there. They just seem to be getting more brazen now the price of scrap is high.

Was talking to an Accountant the other day and he told me about a chap who made an appointment to get him to certify that he wasn't in business as the tax man was after him. After some questioning about where he got his stock from the ****** admitted that most of it was stolen. He was shown the door.

Sounds like a good plan, get some signs put up too. Hopefully it will deter the scumbags wanting to mooch about. at the end of the day NOTHING will stop someone that knows what they are doing.

You could really technical and see about getting some sort of motion detection so it sends you a SMS message to tell you, and from that you can log into the remote viewing thingy.

If you are not up fro getting a dog (big or small) Just get a bunch of doggie toys, bigger the better. Mash them up a bit and leave them scattered around the garden (near entrance) Could even go for a BIG bone nice and chewed.... Then a sign "beware of the dogS" Nice tough football chewed up and flat. Move toys frm time to time (would not want them to think doggies gone to heaven. Then ask your self would you just walk into a garden looking like that? ps don't forget sign on gate "DOGS please close the gate" Cheep as chips. We get them up and down our street regular. Big van 3 up eyes left and right scanning.

Been meaning to get round to something similar, big hard drives cheap nowadays with advent of SSD drives.
Already got the PIR linked to buzzers and door bell, just simple matter of connecting to a camera then through existing 5ghz router, overkill i know for low res vid.

Dogs are difficult as we are open to two sides being a corner plot. Having seen the vets bills for my Dads terrier it will be definately cheeper to fit some cameras.
