Unusual nut size?

if you are talking about reducing the size of your nuts then you may not be concerned with strength but roof bolts are certainly not high tensile so don't expect them to be very strong

how about an m5 nut and bolt with washers?

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't want to compromise the strength of the fastenings so I went for stainless m6 cap bolts, and cut a recess in the metal to allow a standard 10mm hex nut to be held in place while the bolt is screwed into it. FYI I am making brackets to attach a Fiamma wind out awning to the roof bars on my camper.
