Unusual mig wire?

This popped up for sale near me.

However it’s not my usual A18 mig wire

Spec on box states ER70S - 6

I have never come across this spec, I would assure this would change the characteristics of the weld?

Anyone ever used it?

Isnt it basically the same thing? welding supplies direct sells a18 and er70 (sg2) as the same thing basically, same standard

I have it in the eland i just bought (came with the machine) havent noticed any immediate difference

It's the basically same A18 is double deoxidised and ER70S-6 has higher amounts of manganese and silicon.
Better for rusty/dirty metal apparently.

Google says "AWS Class ER70S-6 is a mild steel welding wire that contains higher levels of manganese and silicon than other standard grades of MIG wire to produce high quality welds when used on dirty, oily, or rusty steel."

It does flow in a bit better so tends to lift some of the crap to the top of the weld pool so the weld itself ends up a bit cleaner.
Although, if you are bothering to weld rusty metal in the first place you are probably not that bothered what sort of finish you get anyway.
Any I'm not sure a sealey packaged wire would be any better than a decent brand regular wire..

I didn’t think mig liked rusty steel?

if I was going to weld rusty stuff I would probably just “stick it”

If it brings the impurities to the surface do you have to chip the slag away like stick welding?

No. It's not that effective.
It basically leaves a dirty looking weld but if you grind into that weld it looks a bit cleaner underneath. There is not any slag or anything like that.
If you used normal wire on the same weld then it would look a bit cleaner on the top of the weld when you had finished but not get any cleaner as you ground down.

One of the guys in our workshop uses the stuff on bodywork thickness metal but a lot of that has oil/grease on from tooling. He seems to get on with it fine. I have not noticed any real benefits of it but the stuff I an doing is either new metal that's prepped properly before welding or, old farm stuff that's so bad I don't even bother trying to prep it and I don't look at the welds after running them as i am too busy trying to get the farmer out of the door before he asks for something else...

We have to weld heavy steelwork, 70/80/100mm thick most has been stored outside, supplied by to us by the client, and is in a somewhat poor condition, we are absolutely expected to produce welds with very few (zero) defects;
My employer varied from our normal 'itafill' and purchased a whole batch of "masterweld" Chinese crap, persistent serious (+10%) undercut, excessive roll, occasionally the weld cooled black, vast amounts of silicon awful, awful wire:
The moral of this story? If you're expecting to execute quality welds, use quality equipment and consumables, the best you can afford
