Great tools. A friend of mine has two that he uses for lifting narrowboats when he does re-plating.

I was “Skyping” with my friend in Israel, she is a engineer. The subject of her national service came up.

She showed me a picture of her in the desert, ( down town) setting up a weapon system.

To level the base they used old jacks, showed her the pictures and she recognised them. The ones she had were all old British ones. She recalls some had BR and the biggest one had GWR.

No one knew what they were, but they thought they were UK companies who made them.

Old British made tools having a new lease of life in the sun.

Like Ex pats in spain.

That reminds me, years ago, a mate of mine was seconded I suppose you'd call it from the English company he worked for to a subsidiary in Egypt for a while. He found that the chain hoists etc that had been condemned here were all shipped out there for another lease of life.

Here's my two also rescued from a skip. Only one handle between them original I think, as it's swaged to a smaller diameter for about the last two inches to fit nicely into the jack.

Yep I have a 10t and a 5t was using 5t today for pushing a track rod end in to hold taper whilst tightening the nut,I use them often !

These jacks are still common on the railway. I've even seen them used stacked on top of one another . The BR stamped would of probably been British Rail.

I carry a 5 ton toe jack in the van and have used it twice this week, for replacing king pin bushes and thrust washers on 2 19ft magic carpets.

Totally agree with the fast handle lift on lowering if your not careful...a scaf tube can be useful at times as well...

As has been said letting them down was always the fun bit
Is a apprentice I was pinned between the handle (land rover half shaft) and
a wagon chassis rail
I had several blokes commenting on how strong I was
One kindly gave the handle a push to let me escape

I remember watching a guy at Petters lowering a forklift on one and the handle slipped out. Quite funny to watch him try and get it back in as the arm clacked up & down at a rate of knots!

I'm jealous

Oddly enough I know of a big anvil which has been lying in a workshop unused for at least 25 years but am not sure if the current owner who inherited it from her father [along with a small, new and unused forge with an electric blower on it, a wood lathe etc] intends ever to dispose of any of his stuff.

I suspect distance is against you on the anvil.......

Here,s mine..couple of Simplex 6tonn and whats interesting is the age and maker. I can only persume they were left here when the Yanks shipped out after the war..or that,s the story id,e like to think it was
