Unusual G clamp

Found this today in the great shed clear out, Record 1218 G clamp, what I thought unusual was it does not close completely, it stops about 2" short when you get to the end of the thread, all my other clamps close completely.

I've got a couple of big-ish ones that don't close fully, designed to just have a given 'working range' without an excessively long threaded rod presumably.

Yup, got some like that - you usually find its only on the big ones, 12" normally - but I've seen it on the 8" before.
Serious clamps those - looks like it hasn't seen much use, if any, either.

Quite like the quick action pump clamps that have a mechanism similar to a frame type mastic gun.
Handy old things they are, and can be operated with one hand.

I think it's new, it was in the ammo boxes from when I cleared my dads shed in the 80's, he was a bit of a hoarder

Apparently the coarser acme thread is for woodwork and the finer thread is as said heavy duty for metalworking.

Woodworking clamps also have a wing nut, whereas the engineer's clamp has a tommy bar.

Now I never knew that - today was a good day in my old age - I learnt something
