Unknown oil for machining.

Ive got 50 litres of unknown brand new oil. It could be a very light motor oil or a hydraulic oil, its lighter than 10w40, it's in two drums but unlabeled as it has been decanted out of a 200litre drum at some point.

I daren't put it in my tractor or anything else, but was wondering about using it with my lathe, I have a suds system but I've never rigged it up. Seems a shame to throw it away.

I doubt it would make good cutting oil, you could have a sample sent for analysis, the lab may be able to identify it, I don't know what it would cost but it can't be that expensive as we send oil samples in all the time at work.

Use it your oil can for general use.

I've got 25 litres of mixed engine oil for this purpose.

As rtdcomp said, put it in your oil can for oiling hinges, etc. would be a lot cheaper than buying 3 in 1. You could also thin it 50/50 with white spirit, put it in a spray bottle and use it to protect your lathe machined surfaces, much better than WD40.

Sell it to someone who has an old diesel car cheap fuel

Could it be hydraulic oil? If that's the case, use it in oil cans and as a general '3-in-1' type lubricant.
