Yes you were right . ordinary mig feeders need a constant voltage supply, like a mig welders power source.they wont work properly with a tig/arc supply as they are constant current.
but there are mig wire feeders out there that have fancy electronics that let them work off of any power source, constant current or constant volatge.they are normally more expensive, but come up for sale every now and then.
Miller do one, theres the thermal arc hefty, the lincoln ln25, newarc do one
the lincoln and powcons have a switch to change from constant current to constant voltage
