Uninterruptable Power Supply what do i need to know ?

looking to just keep a pc 5 years old running through power cuts most i assume are short a few mins or just a blip that when you get to the pc in the morning is restarted and you have lost all of the tabs you where browsing

i dont want any thing fancy just to keep the power going as long as possable for as cheap as possable

what do i need to know

only way is battery back up with a generator to start as soon as the power goes off

the battery kicks on saving the pcs while on and the generator starts as soon as the power is lost

then switches over to generator power

Run your pc off a car battery, with an inverter, thé battery on a trickle car battery charger, any part fails, easily and cheaply replaced.

Simplest solution in my books.

Depends on how many watts the computer and monitor needs, if it's say 100watts or so
You may get 15mins out of that unit.
So enough time to back it up and switch it off. Or if it's a dip or surge or very short outage it will smooth that out of the PC supply!

I think pretty much anything will deal with momentary power cuts. Just ensure it has the capacity to last long enough, which depends on the length of the power cut and the spec of the PC.

There are several different types, from memory:

* Offline = you are on utility power, until it goes out of specification, and then it will switch to battery - this is a common type used for all the cheap domestic/small office ones.

* Line interactive = as above but it is monitored and compensation circuits tweak for over/undervoltage. Most are not pure sinewave so you only get an "approximation" of a waveform, which can cause issues with some equipment.

* Online Double Conversion = basically takes the incoming utility, converts it into DC and then inverts it back into AC - which means it can keep the output frequency, voltage and waveform consistent and independent on how messy the input is and have zero switchover speed to battery. They are usually pure sinewave too - Needless to say these are a lot more expensive

power outage is im sure only short lived as there is a few mechanical timers there and if power went off for more than a few mins they would be way out my the time the power was off #

eg 2 hours late if it was off for 2 hours

had thought of this but better to hit in 2 ways stop the pc turning off as well as doing the saving tabs

Are you sure that your O/S isn't just doing some update?

You would expect to see oven clocks or microwave clocks needing to be set

im thinking that from a bit of looking on google 100 watts per basic pc but for shout outages that should be ok

Yes that one would work for a short duration outage, and smooth any hiccups in the supply that may be happening.

I'd be looking at the cause of the issue first before buying a UPS

it could be but there are 2 pcs that went down so im assuming power at the moment and as for other stuff not any times stuff to see that on

as above 2 pcs on the same cuirct and no mcb or rcds triped and cheaked there not on the same power strip so its not that

This would be way overkill for this situation. There are millions of places around the world that keep stuff running with quite small UPS although normally they are there to povide enough power for an orderly shut down. Can't really understand why you are recommending something that is likely to run into thousands just to keep a PC running.

What's your maximum grid down time ? Did you say two pooters ? Do you need the monitors on ? Total watts ?

1000 watts ? Take your average wattage and double it to be on the safe side.

Lighting, if it's at night ?

1000watt one would give you about half an hour or so depending on the load requirements?
Out of interest have you got a total wattage?
