hey guys just wondering what everyone else has done , as i overlap welded my floor pan plates (cheated) so i am left with an neet edge underneith . so what do i do with it ? seem sealer ?
I don't do overlap repairs anymore. That is not restoration, as the overlaps trap moisture and encourage rust to start very soon. This happened to my first welds on a car, despite using weld thru primer in the overlap, seam sealer, paint and waxoyl to protect the weld.
You'd be far better off cutting the hole in the floor and repair patch accurately and butt welding the repairs in. In fact I'd suggest cutting those overlapped repairs out and re-doing them as accurate butt weld repairs so you can seam seal and paint both sides.
butt welding repairs is the best option and the only one for restoration, but for a quick mot repair I would still use overlap (especialy underneath a vehicle).
to answer your question, clean all around the repair inside and out, then apply primer followed by a polyurethane seam sealer inside and out. once it's cured, apply something like anti stone chip underneath the vehicle and a couple of coats of paint inside. schutz and underseal just don't work.
if you clean it well first, and seal it well, it should stave off the rustworm for a good few years!
