Underseal

Im currently welding in some new panels on my car and wondered if anyone can recommend products to put on the newly welded metal. I have some primer which i was going to use on the bare metal once its welded so i need something to protect it. Im welding in a new inner arch, floor section and sill if anyone can help.

body shuts would be my first chose but you need a compressor after that paint on undeerseal. that what i have done my landy chassis with but that was galvanised first

is it a mot patch up or are you trying to make it good as new ?

Many will disagree with me but I always believe in paint and then 'oily' stuff, waxoyl etc, I tend to think thick underseal forms a layer that if chipped can allow moisture in and to spread between the layers.

I can remember the days of Cortinas, Marinas, MGB's etc etc and was always surprised how much bodyseal would peel off in layers, revealing a wet rusty surface.

In fairness todays stuff may be better of course.

Some MOT stations want to see the repair, especially if it a recorded fail, paint being ok but heavy layers of underseal not.

The car failed its mot on excessive corrosion within 12" of the rear axle mounting point. I have repaired the floor pan and inner sill and am currently in the process of replacing the sill, inner arch and outer arch. What would be the best way to proceed to get an mot then? I dont want to go hiding repairs that will need to be inspected?.

might be best to let the tester inspect it while in primer , although no one has ever said anything to me about undersealed repairs

Ok thanks, i suppose id best speak to the testing station then before going ahead with anything just to confirm what they are happy with.

I think a known and recorded on the sytem fail point has to be repaired and clearly visible to ensure the repair has been done correctly, full welds and not tacks etc.

Layers of underseal have been used to hide badly repaired areas and I have certainly heard of some stations refusing to recheck due to lack of visibility, what I am not sure about is if this is just the garage itself laying down the law or if it is a recognised element of MOT testing.

Ill be spot welding the sill where it was originally spot welded, along the top seam where the rubber door seal sits and along the lower edge where it meets the floor, i take it this is acceptable then?.

yeah sounds fine
