Hi,
Quite a while ago whilst having an eye test I was told I was starting with cataracts; not a problem at the moment but I wondered if red hot metal gives out ultra violet light? I've always used eye protection for welding but I'm on with a job for a friend brazing tungsten carbide tips onto short lengths of bar stock; twenty of them this the second batch. I'm using MAPP gas canisters to heat the metal to cherry red; I did the first batch just wearing glasses but now I've bought gas welding goggles to try these yet to arrive. I've also designed and made a 975A brazing machine using a commercial 1,950W micro wave transformer which I'm still experimenting with.
I'd rather be over cautious and I'll try using the new goggles when they arrive but I wondered if anyone had information regarding this; here's what I'm playing with;
The brazing machine under construction.
Brazing machine completed with both manual and timer control.
Using a motor as a test load.
It works but more experimenting needed it's melting the brass electrodes but I've ordered spot welding electrodes.
Blanks being prepared for receiving the TC tips; one completed.
Here's a tip just brazed and the reason for my concern having been staring at the cherry red hot metal; a third hand is used to hold the tip in position. I've used blowlamps and cartridge torches many times but thought these were safe unlike welders?
Kind regards, Colin.
