The only time I've ever had a slitting disc fracture is if it's snatched or grabbed usually from been a touch forceful with them or cutting something in the vertical position where instead of falling away from you as you cut it can close up and nip the disc.
Safe things to use if you understand there limits. Goes with all equipment that though. Let the disc do the work at its own pace and properly protect yourself.

I used loads of the 1mm discs before I got a plasma, no problems, let the disc do its job, no pressure, go at it like Huey McMong and you could snag it.
I still have them in my toolset because a disc is easier to cut a straight line with, a point cutter like plasma or jigsaw can go a wandering.

I tried using a 3mm disk the other day dont know where it cane from but what a oile of rubbish wouldnt even think about them for cutting takes 3x as long is 3x as hard work and as i was using a cordles grinder a barttery only lasted half a meter of roofing sheet put a 1mm disk in and battery lasted the rest of the day
As for eye protection i picked up a pair of these the other day

And they actually properly seal on your face all the way round 100% so much better than the more expensive uvex ones i have always used and would definitely recommend

I use them a lot - cut through some 10mm plate last night.
Whoever said they blow up when they get wet is talking out of their hat. I use them at work in all weathers when wire sawing, which means they are soaking wet all the time. The only time I break one is when I drop the grinder on the floor.

Yeah as said before . with all cutting tools .. let the tool do the work........
The only time I have broken one is when the grinder was dropped, and we use them in the wet with no issues other than a slight spray of water on start up.
I use Bosch as I can bet them cheaply, currently; well free from work.
