I did a little MIG in DT at school and thought it was great, but my father was big on the woodwork side like his father so we never "had need" for a welder or grinder in the workshop when I was growing up, much to my dismay as I got older and wanted to build bigger projects! Fast forward 20 years and after receiving the above as a gift because I often stopped to look at welders at boot fairs I've realised there are loads of projects I could use a welder for (I knew this but had never bit the bullet)
The above welder is a 50A+ flux core welder and I'm generally welding small things to repair them or currently trying to weld some 55gal barrels that seem to be about 1mm thick, it really doesn't do that very well and keeps blowing through as well as making a big fluxey mess!
I've finally embraced getting a big gas cylinder and I'm thinking probably going MIG but there are quite a few aluminium projects I'd like to do as well so maybe a dual TIG machine, or look out for 2 machines used? (I guess MIG can run pure argon if I only want to deal with 1 cylinder?) I'm happy/would prefer going used to save a bit of money as this is definitely - "Spend £5 on material and £500 of equipment to make a £1.50 part" territory :-) So what should I be looking out for on the used market?
