UK Exit and work

Nobody seems to have commented on my posts which are about the logistics problems we will all face.
Remember the Beast from the East? Supermarket shelves were empty for weeks after.
Remember KFC having to close many branches when they changed supplier?
We are now so reliant on just in time that even a small wobble causes havoc.
This is nothing compared to what will happen if we leave the customs union.
The French will do all they can to cause havoc at the ports.
Anyone who has driven out of Gibraltar into Spain will know what I mean. Just 1 bloke checking every single car!

Very valid point "Fizzy" about "the chain of supply".

We buy in car parts - obviously German/French parts will be more expensive and be slower getting here.

But... We are leaning - now - all Japanese and Korean parts come thru Hamburg - they are bought in Euros by shipping agents then sold to us.

As we are such a small consumer - there will be no special treatment for the UK.

I know this forum is not about politics.

However you voted - in or out.

I personally now wish we have never been asked.

My holidays consist of getting on a cruise ship in Southampton, and not getting off the ship Or flying to Florida... Honestly, what the french decide to do at Calais is of no concern to me. I fly all over the world for work and deal with Visas and immigration on a regular basis - it's no bother.

No the French hate us on principle - as do most of Europe! Anything they can do to make our lives awkward they will. I don't know why people think they will do us any favours.
Look at the way the French farmers behave towards British imports.

But they behave like that if we are in or out......

There are rules and laws in place - if we have no deal they will have free rein.

I spent a couple of years in the early 70's pre EU membership, doing international removals ..mainly from London to Amsterdam and the reverse, having to unload half the truck in the dark on me own at Harwich or the Hook of Holland to "Prove the Carnet " ...I pity anyone going back to that...

Additionally, I recall, for another job, i had to buy from Austria, as that was the finish the customer wanted.

That customer was located in Finland. I doubt he would have been interested if i had had said "sorry, i dont buy from the mainland, but i can offer you this finish (that you dont want) instead"

Again, it would be good if you stayed on topic, rather than having a dig. The OP asked about the preparations people were making, not for people in favour of the current situation to insult those who think its wise to prepare for the unknown.

Oh that mess...i was living and working in the USA at the millennium and it was that bad with all the hype i remember along with the whole town sitting at the stroke of midnight with everything electrical in the house turned off and hoping after midnight it would all turn back on again and all work...well yes it all worked and we then had to think what to do with a bedroom full to the ceiling of canned food and water including enough candles to light a town up...I blamed the media then and still do today over every knee jerk reaction by the great unwashed in believing the world will end when things change..

We export about £5.5 Billion worth of goods to Japan annually - they are actually our 6th biggest trading partner outside the EU, but all of this trade is subject to tariffs and strict import controls.

If we stay in the Customs Union then the EU Japan trade deal will remove these tariffs / controls for us and make it easier for the UK to sell into the rich Japanese market.

If we leave the EU without a deal then firstly our tariff situation probably worsen as we'd be defaulting to third country status under WTO rules, but also other EU countries would now be able to take advantage of the trade deal to undercut UK manufacturers and get Japanese orders.

Sure there are things like Scotch whiskey that the Japanese will probably buy anyway whatever the tariff situation, but there are a lot of other products like foodstuffs, machine parts and chemicals, where they may well buy the best value for money product, meaning if we're outside the trade deal then it will be difficult for us to compete.

Well some one has to win.....its very simple but obviously more complicated in reality But....given i sell something to the EU at 100 pounds if it gets an extra £10 slapped on it.... then i put my prices up by £10.....the EU consumer pays more.

If i keep it the same i would expect the government to add £10 to items from the EU and then return it in the form of reduced taxation.

If your prices go up by £10 then the EU customer may well buy an equivalent product from an EU company not affected by tariffs, which would now be £10 cheaper, assuming all other production costs are the same.

The government has already said that if we have a 'No Deal' exit then, apart from a few select areas such as farming, they won't be adding tariffs to anything, so I doubt you'll see anything.

They have a trade surplus because their manufacturing sector represents over 30% of a USD 4 trillion economy, while ours in under 20% of a USD 3 trillion economy - i.e. the UK has a smaller economy and smaller proportion of manufacturing.

We won't improve our trade deficit with Japan by making it harder to sell to them, plus it's unlikely people will stop buying Japanese televisions, etc.

Perhaps, but I'm guessing they're just scared that people might feel the impact of leaving on the cost of living and perhaps start thinking that they might not ever get a leaving dividend and that maybe it wasn't a good idea, and so they're hoping that not adding tariffs to goods will keep the prices in the shops down.
