Its actually the feed (mainly the silage) that large producers use. Feeding cabbage also has the same affect.
A small local producer makes goats cheese that does not have that taste. They feed grains & hay as we did when we had lots of them.

I recall being in France with my then wife a good few years ago and stopping in a shopping centre for a toastie: the woman said she only had one 'ordinary' cheese left but she could do us a goats' cheese... I thought OK, what could possibly go wrong? About 5 minutes later when I was literally retching in a waste-paper bin I had my answer.

Goats cheese tastes of goat, end of. Billies smell of extra goat. There seems to be a genetic variation in the ability to link the taste of the cheese with the smell of the billy.
The only thing we found to mask the smell of goat was diesel! We used to milk 1000. They've all gone now!
Rubbish, good well made goats cheese does not smell or taste of goat. Sadly you cant get good well made goats cheese in a shop. You need a small local artisan maker.
With 1000 I bet you fed silage & nuts.
The last house we bought used to be a small goat dairy & artisan cheese makers. There was no billy or goat smell or taste in the cheese or milk. After looking at the house & trying the milk & cheese we tried some shop stuff, that was rank so I know I can link the two together when it is there.
They made lots of effort to keep all the billies equipment just for them even changing clothes between one & the other. never using the same barns or stalls as the other goats. Only time they shared was for mating & that was mostly done in an penned area made from gates.
Billy smell sticks to stuff. I thought the dog was stinking about 3 years after we got rid of all the goats. I had used a small D link on his chain that had been used for a billy chain. Even after being out in the weather for 3 years it still had the billy smell on it. Cleaning it dint work. Chucked it in the end.
We carried on with goats for a while but more for the milk & meat as I was crap at making cheese. Towards the end we started to feed silage to reduce costs. But stopped using the milk at the same time due to the bad taste.
