But there's always someone out there that has some gadget to get things to still work without being present

They can be a pain in the jacksy..i have them on my E60 beemer and if i put a bit of air in one tire then it see,s this as a problem and i need to go through the screen menu and calibrate the current pressures to dis-arm the warning....never thought putting air in or out of tires could be so forward yet backward at the same time in terms of user friendliness

I vaguely remember something about towbar sockets being part of the test requirements as well, don't know if that ever came in but again, certainly never heard a tester mention it let alone check it.

One of my mates had a fail as his socket didn't work. He ended up fitting a new one as it was full of water and corrosion in the back.

@hotponyshoes 13pin sockets should be tested (7 pin aren't as they're not type approved), but all I'll say, is if you were to move the socket tester in our place, it would likely be weeks before any of the mot testers noticed...

We had a set of touareg wheels powder coated for a guy to fit onto to a transporter a couple of weeks ago and got a new set of sensors for those but he just had it all deactivated instead.

It's the part number that is important rather than what car you use them with but one other thing to check is have a look and see if yours have a frequency printed on them somewhere.
I think the ones for a transporter will be 433mhz so see if yours match that and I will have a look for mine.

Or if you are anywhere near Frome pop over and I can show you how to deactivate/reactivate the system. You can buy a cable to do it yourself then (about £50 plus a laptop with a usb socket) and it's a 5min job.

If you want to buy them locally TPS (trade part supplies) sell the genuine ones.
Ring them with the part number and the frequency.
Although they are called Trade part supplies I don't think you actually need to be in the trade to buy but I don't think they deliver unless you have an account but they have branches all over the place.

Although there are a lot of part numbers for the sensors it is easy to narrow them down,
The black ones are for alloy wheels, the orange ones are for steel wheels and there is a lighter orange/yellow for run flat wheels (I think, basically get the same colour as you have now!)
There are about 5 different frequencies they use but unless yours is an import it should be 433mhz. That's from memory so may not be quite right but you need it to be exactly the same as your existing ones.

The rest of the part number variations are depending on the colour/style of the valve bit poking out, silver/chrome/black etc.
If you fit black ones to silver wheels you can put your old silver caps on and it's not really noticeable. You wont notice if you swap to chrome from silver either unless you wash the car every day.

My mot tester checks the 7 pin socket on my car every year, I did think about disabling it then asking him to point out the bit in the manual stating it's a testable item when he tries to fail it.

Dai the MoT was ecstatic when I presented the last Jaguar but one for its MoT - with a 13 pin socket! It was the first one ever presented and an opportunity to use his shiny new testing widget. Seems everyone else sticks to the horrible twin 7 pin jobbies.

The faintly amusing thing was he couldn't fathom out how to use his shiny new tester so after 10 minutes of faff just 'ticked the box' anyway. This must have been 5 years ago. I last presented a car for test about 18 months ago and commented this was the first one with no towbar and the idle conversation moved on to that day. He couldn't remember where the tester was!

I recall the Rover 800 I presented decades ago was the very first catalyst car he had ever tested too.

I suppose the solution to that would be to plug a 7pin adaptor into the 13pin socket before the test then!
Unless you are going to use it, in that case get it fixed!

I've never had a car with TPMS but I know you can get some funny situations on early systems. An old boss of mine had a Chrysler 300C, bought a spare set of wheels and had them refurbed. They didn't have the sensors. He had no issues and everything was fine until one day he pulled up behind/next to another one. His car then started registering tyre pressure fault and he couldn't clear it. I don't remember him ever saying he fixed it. He believes his car had picked up the other car's sensors.

Ive just installed an aftermarket system on my L200, yes I have a couple of pressure gauges but an alarm to warn me of imminent pressure loss and the ability to check all 4 tyres at the press of a button appeals now the weather is turning and my years are advancing

Must be part of their training as the Selby branch is just the same
