Tyre pressure monitors

I have a spare set of wheels and tyres for my Touareg Escape, the tyre are not mounted, Apparently I must fit the pressure monitors, Prices seem to be pretty high, does anybody have any recommendations for a reasonable supplier? Not desperate at the moment, but separate wheels and tyre are taking up twice the space, TIA.

Why? Maybe VAG does things differently but I have a set of winter wheels/tyres without TPMs for my Jaguar. When I fitted them I just got the warning message on the dashboard but it didn't put the car into any form of Limp Home mode.
When I refitted the original wheels with their TPMs by the time I got onto the main road they had done their handshake with the rest of the car, the warning message went away and the correct pressures and corners were displayed - about 10 steps through the menu, but that hadn't changed!

I wasn't desperate to have TPMs as I'm old enough to have learned to check tyre pressures regularly and young enough to bend down to do so.

I think its an mot fail these days on a newer car? I'd say a good rule, the number of badly maintained cars out there.

Id quite like them on the bike - had a few punctures that could have ended badly, had I not felt the tyre go squishy. Proper in wheel sensors are cheap enough, but there are zero after market units that are compatable to read them. Only the dangerous sort that keep the valve open, no thanks! I may buy a set, dissasemble the sensor and glue it i side the rim, not sure it would still work?

other half dad hates this set the tyre presssure and depending on what time of day it is and temps it goes off pump tyre up ok then a few days later when its hot it goes off and says its to high so lets pressure out and rince and repeat

Genuine vw sensors are down to about £20 each now.
You might need 5 if the spare is monitored.

They do need to be "programmed" to the car but read the handbook as I think you can do this via the dash on a touareg.

I think Kram is right, it's an mot fail if the tpms is showing an error. You can deactivate the whole system easily/cheaply. Probably still technically an mot fail but no tester (apart from a main dealers) is going to check it.

I remember being like that.

Sold the Alvis - which replaced the Sunbeam Talbot - before my 21st birthday and bought my first Jaguar before my 25th. A Lotus and a Ford (!) in between. Taste dear boy, taste.

It's Jaguar by the way. No long term Jaguar owner on this side of the pond is as likely to say Jag or Jaaaaaag as he would say Jagwaaaaar.

Yes, I like the occasional G&T
No, I'm not old enough to have taken up Golf yet
Yes, it's an automatic, but that's only because my last 2 were available auto only.

Edit: yes it appears to be a genetic defect - all three of my sons own Jaguars, but only one is currently using his as a daily driver.

Did we establish if VAG will restrict vehicle performace in the absence of TPM signals?

It depends on what kind of system is fitted.

Some rely on the ABS and wheel speeds to calculate if a wheel is starting to turn disproportionately faster than the rest for some reason.
Some have to be coded.
Some are completely self learning.

If it was a coded system, I'd look to see if it's possible to get your existing sensors cloned. That way you could swap wheels without having to get anything recoded.

Yup. I presented previous car for its MOT with winter wheels (steel rims, no TPMS sensors fitted) and it failed. The sensors for that car were £55ea so didn't buy another set for the winter wheels...

New car uses the ABS system and I'm glad to have the TPMS again all-year round; something I'll try and look out for on future cars.

I would definitely be interested in VW genuine TPMS at £20-00, but I cant find any named units for near that price, Cheaper versions are all from China,

If you completely disable the system via coding then no. No restriction at all.
I have driven plenty of them showing low/high/missing warnings and never noticed anything like limp mode?

The amount of bonging coming from the dash will put you off driving one with a fault anyway.

The Golf just flashes a light at you if the pressure is low, nothing else happens. You reset them through the onboard computer. No idea if you can code new ones the same way

You need to have the multi-function dash display, common on the toureg/pahton/Q7/A6/A8 etc and pretty common option on a lot of others.
I think it needs to be a high line spec car.
If you have thr option to adjust the brightness of the foot well illuminations and that sort of thing you should be able to do it.
Instructions are in the handbook under "how to rotate wheels" or something like that.

I have got a vag computer programming tool.
At least once a month I get somebody come round and give me £40 to do something with my laptop that they could have done on the drive at home if they had just rtfm.

Never had great experience with TPMS tbh. If you don't realise you've got a flat tyre, Then you shouldn't be driving is my thoughts

I think it might technically be a mot fail, but no mot tester is ever going to run the vin number and see if it should have original had it fitted or not.
Give it a few more years and stuff like that might start getting tested automatically.

I vaguely remember something about towbar sockets being part of the test requirements as well, don't know if that ever came in but again, certainly never heard a tester mention it let alone check it.
