I left school and worked in the office of a local company that produced metal pressings, doing general administration, some of the toolmakers were a bad influence on me and taught me what they knew

I'm past the 70 now still go on the piff with what's left of my mates but the thing is the next time we meet it's the same crack cos we can't remember what we talked about the last time so we get piffed again and so on happy days.

In the "other people viewed" bit there seems to be a good few myfords asking multiple thousands.

Erm, what?

A few hundred tops for a reasonable one, maybe a grand if it's mint and comes with every accessory ever made.

Where are these prices coming from?

I assume at one point in time they were cheap and plentiful so the guys in the garden sheds started buying them and suddenly they became the lathe to have. But I'm with you, wouldn't pay much for a Myford myself, better small lathes out there.

Ive owned a couple and used a few, decent small lathe, but 8 grand buys a lot of machine a real one.

Myfords are sought after by the model maker, For me its a status thing. A boxford is a far better machine foot print is little different. Guess it comes down to supply and demand, they are only worth what someone will pay.

As we all know fantasy and reality are very different.

as far as I know they have never been made in Halifax (as in machined here). Myford lathes used to be manufactured in Nottingham, but went bust in 2011

The name is now owned by RDG tools and operate from the same address in halifax, which looks to be a small industrial unit of less than 3000 square ft. I think I'll be paying them a visit later this week though as I could do with a set of collets.

Boxford have been used in schools thoughout the decades and they recently moved to a new purpose built factory in Elland, they used to be made 200 yards from where I live. when I left school in the late 80's I think I applied for a job as an apprentice draughtsman there.

A lot of machine tools were made in Yorkshire though. Harrison at Heckmondwike, Tom Senior's Atlas Works at Liversedge to name a few

You can buy reconditioned Myfords and if I didn't know better I'd say that looks like one.

Slight off topic, the first mortgage I had was £5000 and that was for 2 dwellings, I know you can't machine any thing with dwellings but you can't live in a lathe either.
