Yes, have the associated servos, if I recall they have Sick Stegmann sine/cosine encoders on them.

Ah cool - I think they are what we referred to as resolvers (basically absolute position feedback).

Ours were used on printing presses controlling the tension, they would be used as a brake for 99% of the time, and then as drive motor to spin up the new reel to speed match the paper. Very clever stuff (nowt to do with me I just made them work lol) , never had many issues with the drives but the heat sink fans do fail and cause problems - the drive just shuts down, it’s easy to see in the software as you can see the heat sink temp alarm but with just the keypad you can be left scratching your head!

Can't help with the Lenze or Schneider stuff, but for Starter and the Micromaster you'll need an RS232 null model cable and a 'connection kit' adapter for the front of the drive.

I've got some MM4 keypads if you'd like one.

You could put a pair of contactors on the output of the drive and switch it between the windings. Best of both worlds? - just don't change over whilst the motor is spinning!

The usual drives I have used on my machines were Allen Bradley DSD drives. Only reason I got them was I found some cheap on eBay and quite liked them so got more for other retrofits. Heard lots of bad things about AB stuff but they have done me OK so far and the software is a breeze to use for setting them up. I have bought quite a lot of them through the years cheap on eBay but they seem to have gone crazy in prices in the last few years.
My best buy was a 12KW AC servo for £200 brand new and the associated 22Kw DSD drive for £150, also brand new

Regarding the contactor idea, maybe I could just use the drum switch already fitted, just tuck it out the way so that it can not be inadvertently changed by the idiot operator (me )
Wonder though, would the VFD be happy enough as I thought it might need different parameters for the different speeds?

You don’t need the adaptor though it is the easiest way - You can also connect in to the comms terminals if you have a 232- 485 adaptor (14 and 15 iirc but I’d have to double check)

Yes I do, not sure how it connects though as I think it may be RJ45 for the Telemech's might have some adapters though, will see what I have when I get back to the workshop.

The 420 isn't a vector drive, so there isn't too much for it to get the hump about.

If you had a MM440, you could use DDS switching to configure it twice, with settings for vector for each winding, and switch between the two using a digital input via your drum switch.

Was doing a search through the boxes of stuff I had, was hoping to find the adapter but afraid not, found another 420 (a used one) and some new replacement fans but that was all.

I think this is the 485 adaptor I use (or one similar- they are all the same I’m sure) along with a usb - serial converter.

I use the same thing along with a butchered cat5 cable for schneider drives - I suppose I’ve got no excuse for not getting hold of the proper schneider cable but this works fine so I’ve never bothered

I got them in a big box of goodies(VFD's, Prox's etc etc) I got from a pal when a place he worked was throwing out a load of stuff, have two so could let you have one if you want.

They look like they have been fitted as the tab has screwdriver marks from someone trying to remove the wrong way Blades have no muck on them so possibly they have just been tried to eliminate a non working fan problem.

Edit, just tried it on 24v and it is spinning up fine and quiet.

Just noticed the other 420 I found earlier has no fan so likely that is where the marked one has come from.

I’ll pick some up from somewhere, I think I may mysteriously need some for a job in the near future
