Two post lift but low ceiling height

heres one i done it was 2 derelict propertys with crappy front doors the roof was falling in and the old sash windows were fitted with sandstone lintels above and the brickwork was cracked from the spread roof .all removed and bricked up new windows re pointed and sandblasted by me . not bad for someone that puts 13 amp plugs on for a living mind u i get them inspected once a year . i completely rebuilt it 25 years ago. i practice what i preach

I never saw a front door that narrow before. Gonna buy you a load of mince pies for crimbo and see if you can get out in January

I think the ceiling is tying the rafter ends together....like it should... even if the "floor" timbers are not, (thery appear to be on the wall plate) there will be others at the same level that are... unless there are collar ties hidden by the structure

As I said originally it needs a good coat of looking at, the floor/ceiling joists are certainly in tension,
just because you have bodged the odd flat roof to put a lantern in isnt the same thing, the stress pathways are very different,

If you can dig the floor how about a small depth pit 2/3 ft or so then use a baseless two post, I was going to do that now it is only two steps into the pit, not like climbing in and out , you can do your under work /wheel work without lifting lowering all the time.
I now want a full height sissor lift after fitting one for a mate, we used a on floor base one, but dug out the concrete only 4" and it fitted flush to the surface he has a busy garage and uses it daily it was a chinese one but was well made and works fine 1ph £2400 I think.

How about making a rectangular steel angle frame the length and width of the car around the opening required,and bolting each joist to the sides of the rectangle then you could have two or three ratchet straps across to each side to put tension in the frame,
but when the car is lifted it would only be for a short time, just remove the straps, the majority of the time the tension would hold the frame.
The hole could be boxed up to the roof and the collar tied beams would form the false ceiling that would maintain some storage area, up there .

my lift is installed in a simalar building.

the lift goes up 1900 mm and iirc the posts are 2400mm + 50 ish mm for the H frame

we just got in there with the chainsaw and cut a hole out, then braced the roof further up, left as much as possible of the original floor in to keep the waal plates held together, and added a few extra straps holding them to the wall, in our application the walls been stone clad are thick enough not to push out

How about a single-post lift? The type I installed used a long hydraulic ram running up the steel post; there was a limit switch you could set to stop at whatever lift height you wanted and the post was no higher than a standard house ceiling although you could easily cut it down if needed.

There's a near-derelict house about a quarter-mile north of you (towards the tea factory), it's had scaffolding around it for years, must be the slowest refurb on the planet

yep the reason why is its a grade 2 listed building and the planning wont let them knock it down and rebuild it with old bricks there on with the barn conversion at the back at the mo but it cant be seen from the road

And we have made good plenty of work thats been "bodged" by so called chartered building engineers too so the title does,nt impress me ..btw we dont bodge anything we do mate...all the load calcs are done prior to cutting and fitting by a very clever building engineer indeed. "just because you have bodged the odd flat roof" how very very very dare you
