Here's a simple test I learned from my scraping tutor - how to align a tailstock perfectly with the spindle.
The method is simple. Put some scrap in the chuck and turn a collar on it to exactly the diameter of the tailstock ram. Use a micrometer to measure them both. Now get your tailstock and bring the ram up to the collar you have turned.
Put a dial indicator on the saddle and run it across the joint. Adjust the tailstock until it reads the same on the collar and the tailstock and then you know they are perfectly aligned.
