Technology improves though. I won't cry over old TVs.

As with most things, recent tech gives a more disposable product and better profits. While screen tech has improved massively, I have doubts that a product at the same price level will be any better.

They are making OLED tv's now. Any good? Gives a massively improved contrast for watching darker scenes etc.. of a film. I havent watched one but had a few oled screen phones.

I buy a new TV when the old one dies, the performance increase is usually pretty good. I don't want to be hanging onto old tech forever though and I think we get very good value out of a TV regardless over the lifespan. The living room is on the small side so we don't need a huge TV. Daft thing is, the wife watches loads of telly and struggles telling the difference between SD and HD sometimes. I watch nowt really, Prefer Youtube and occasionally troubling the workshop instead.

nothing is transmitted in true sd anymore. all channels are at least 720p. bbc hd etc is 1080p. on a smaller tv it isnt really noticable.

OLED TVs have been around for a while now. We've had an LG OLED for about 4 years and couldn't be happier with it. Films shot in 4k that have HDR (HDR10 or Dolby Vision) look incredible, the difference is night and day when compared to the LED backlit LG TV in the next room. Not cheap, but well worth the extra money if you can stretch to it.

Have an oldish but adequate 32" panasonic tv. Possibly 10-15 years old. Working this morning. Power turns on but this afternoon has no picture, no menus, just blank screen but can see the backlight is on.

Dont really want a new one. May open it up and hopefully it will just be a failed capacitor or something easy to repair.

Any recomendations for a good replacement, similar 32-40"?

Asking the obvious - but have you tried a reset? Our older Toshiba 32" does similar from time to time (An has done since new actually) - sound is fine but no picture. Remove plug from wall, hold power button for 30 seconds, plug back in and bingo - picture is back!

We've got a Toshiba 4k HDR "Smart" TV. Picture is great but the software is shocking.

Never had a TV that crashes before..

Back to Samsung for my next TV.

I have been distracted and ill the last few days so have not looked at tvs yet. I think we are decided on a 43"+ sized OLED.
Are there any good real shops to see them, or best to read reviews and use amazon?

i used to have Samsung tv's but a few years ago we got an LG one and the difference is day and night.

i would very much recommend the LG ones

You might struggle to see a 43" in the shops, as most seem to stock 55" or bigger. However you might be able to see the 55" version of the TV your interested in at somewhere like Curries.

Nothing beats OLED but they aren't cheap.
LG made all the OLED panels until recently so no matter what you bought it would have an LG screen.

@Kram If you can get access, Costco have a good selection (all of the sizes in all of the colours ) plus a 'no quibble' 5 year warranty. CLICKY

At the moment its between the LG OLED 42/43" and the 48". I want the 48 but the others think it will be too big...

Now, there are several versions of each.

The "C3 Evo" seems like its the newest and also has some dimming features that cant be disabled in the service menu. I doubt that will be a huge problem for us anyway.

C2 appears to be the 2022 version, reviews say just as good.

A2 appears to be a cheaper version than the C2 and only listed by an amazon seller, but it seems the panel is just as good?

just buy it or even better get the 60 inch the size of the tv is not worth worrying about unless you have a very small front room we are aprx 4 meters away from the tv and we got a 65 inch it seamed big for about 2 weeks now it normal you dont even notice it

Just buy the biggest and cheapest you can find. Cello or something. Sitting here watching a 50" Medion from Aldi. Fine with a surround sound kit.

Appears it is reflective, from the review pics, good way to ruin a screen is making it reflective.

They are reflective, which I agree can be a pain if you have a light source in the wrong place.

Regarding size, with a 4k TV you want to be closer / have a bigger size than you would for a 1080p TV otherwise you won't see the detail. There's a lot of info online about the "best" size vs distance.

Yes however others will not allow it.. partly they dont want it to be "the focal point of the room". Currently about 3 meters from the 32" HD Panasonic but should be able to move it so be ablut 2m.

My sight is better than most, so I'll take a 48" at too far as still far improved over a distant smaller HD tv.
