Hi all,can someone tell me why you sould sharpen the tips,as i have seen somewhere that when welding ally you dont have to put point on, you can use as they are.Kev.
For AC welding a lot depends on the flavour of machine. In the early days the tungsten would melt and ball up quite a bit. As kit evolved (squarewave AC and then inverter squarewave etc) less 'arc cleaning' was needed, the tungsten got an easier time and balled up less to the point that with a modern inverter, as Langy said, sharpening (albeit not too sharp) them will give better results
my inverter seems to like pointy with a flat end 1/2 to 1/3 the diamiter of the tungsten and it'll stay that way. if you end up with more ac balance or amps it'll soon ball up
i find it much easyer to get a nice weld with a pointed tungsten also the ones with the gold coloured marking are much easyer to use and keep a point much better than the ones with the white marking but u cant rember what there called
