How far the tungsten sticks out depends on what your doing, if your trying to get into a horrid corner then you might need to push the tunsten out, ive had it out as far as 25mm. If im doing fillet welds i tend to push the tungsten out just far enough so it makes it difficult to put it in the weld pool. I guess on average its normally out about 10mm max

That's a really good question. I'd wondered how I should be doing awkward pipe angles. Sticking the tungston out so you get an arc where you want it does seem very sensible.
How about flat sheet? There's a lot of mention of 1/8 inch projection around the place, though I think it was snowcat made an excellent suggestion of no stick out at all, so the tungston could never be dipped in the weld pool. That sounded like a really good idea to me but haven't tried it yet.

Only thing you have to watch with pushing the tungsten out more is it gets ruddy hot, if you are close to the max amperage for the size of tungsten, it might cause problems with over heating, just means if need be use a bigger tungsten. If you do push the tungsten out, you will need to increase gas flow a little.
If you have no stick out when doing flat work, means you cant give the tungsten a quick dip by accident.

As iv said malc, I just havent got the steady hands (too much injury i think) to keep the tungsten away from the work and the filler (I hate HF zaps), so tend to run with it flush in the cup, not strictly text book practice but hey you do what works for you, it can cook the ceramic but there cheep in the scheme of things so what the hell, Sometime for akward corners and tight spaces the tungsten has to come out, The only time i really pull the tungsten out is to walk the cup but as your resting the ceramic on the work diping the tungsten is not a problem.

Ah Snowcat, run this 'walking the cup' past me would you please. I've read about it, seen videos of it, but still cannot get a 'wedding ring' root' to save my life!
I'm even starting evening classes tomorrow to try and master it, did you have a practical demonstration, or teach yourself?

I was shown it by a mate of mine a very fine tig welder he used to tig nuclear power stations together, Im mediocre at the technique at best, I find the hardest thing with it is keeping the edge of the root parellel a roll too far and you end up with a messy edge, Large diameter ceramics help (me anyway) as they rest and roll much more easy so does my big torch, the other problem i find is sheer indurance on the wrist (no jokes please) because of the speed and the twisting motion., I like putting a tig root in on pipe's and then do the stick fill and cap as well, its really is a boots and braces weld.
I keep thinking I will do some more practice on the walking the cup stuff, but the time for any practice time just doesnt happen anymore.
