Tungstens should be ground perpendicular to the grinding face I believe.

Resin diamond wheels go to much finger grits which may be better. Not needed for tungsten but they last well enough. 4-6" ones are quite cheap on ebay. I made up a small dc motor powered grinder for it. I'd say 8" is too big but wont do any harm.. just a waste Id use an alumina wheel flon the 8" for general work instead.

Ive got sillicon carbide in my 1/2hp 6" grinder. SC has a soft bond so wears much too fast, *very* dusty. No advantage but SC wheels go slightly finer grits than alumina. I use this most out of lazyness, no need for the extra power with tungstens. Worst option.

Have another cheap silverline 150w grinder, perfectly adequate for tungstens, doesnt have enough power for much else so ideal for a dedicated one. The 60grit alumina wheel has no problems with tungstens but is not what I call fine but apart from that works perfectly for it, I dont have space to keep in the shed, rarely bother to get it out.

If you get a resin wheel note there are many shapes. The OD cylinder type are best for doing drills and tungstens. There are bowl/cup wheels where you use the face, ideal for inserts and cutters. Then there are thin tapered wheels for profile stuff.


Not ideal but its only a fiver - 180 grit 5" bowl/face diamond wheel

3 bench grinders might be nice, can convert the tungsten 8" one to buffing wheels.

Yeah, that'll be 3 I've got then. Only bought this 8" one back in march to use for my electrodes. Seems like a smaller 6" might be a good option

How have you worn out an eight inch wheel in a year, just sharpening tungstens?

I haven't worn out a six inch wheel grinding tungstens, lathe tools and drill bits, for nearly ten years!

Think it's just a crappy soft wheel that came with the grinder. My other 8" that I use for everything else has been the same wheel for years.

Yes, I do like a bit of grinding, but significant wear is undetectable.

I got a Tungstenmate off flea bay to put on a redundant/spare DreMel i happen to have. Gives consistent results and the correct angles for each size.
