One big advantage of using a diamond wheel is if you dip the tungsten and get that big ally blob on it you can use the corner of the wheel to cut the tungsten off and save a stack of grinding.

Or so I've heard anyway....

Plus of course the wheels are great for sharpening carbide lathe tools.

I just hang the end over the bench an tap it to shear it. To the OP, I have always sharpened tungstens on a bench grinder

Another quick and dirty way to cut off the blobs is to use the small bolt cutting holes that you find in some Cheapo crimping tools. You lose about 3mm of tungsten each time, but it's quick and easy. Careful though, as the blobs fire out like little bullets so watch where you're pointing it!

I use a diamond coated grinding disc using a slitting saw holder in a pillar drill.

I already had the slitting saw holder,but I think it'll be the same as one below which does from 1/2" to 1" saws, so it'll be ok for 5/8 and 7/8 saws, which is near enough for 16 and 22mm bore grinding wheels.

Personally I use a flap disc in an angle grinder but then again I'm cheap

Only being honest, sold it at a loss to the forum member, great item, bench grinder is ok but a pain in the ass when you have to get up from your work just to redo the tungsten, my cordless grinder hangs on my bench and keeps my work 100% on point Tbh after owning this one I'd buy a pro grinder. But then I guess it depends on what your doing, in my case a BBQ or a £3,000 termi system

I know why you did it, but putting that in the description isn't good for sales. No one buying one off eBay knows where to get them, you could have said "Cost £300 so I am selling at a huge loss", still sell it for the price you had it so you're not being (really) dishonest.

I know what your saying, however, be warned, these things come round to bite you, and I don't wish to be bitten lol Sometimes when dealing with such items the truth pays, also they are of "limited" supply, so those in the know would be aware that they are a rare thing, only to get harder to acquire in the next few months as the last of them will be sold.

My bench-ground tungstens come out much better than that example. Can't blame the tool for poor technique.

Give you a race, your bench grinder V my tool, LeMans style start, then we place them under my x5 macro lens for some scoring.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that a portable tool isn't handy or faster or even better - it's certainly handier than lugging a bench grinder about and probably wins on speed and consistency. What I am saying is that if you only weld at your bench occasionally, like I do, you can do just as well with a £18 diamond wheel on your bench grinder and save yourself needing to buy a bespoke tool plus it can be used for other jobs.

If you're out and about on location the battery one wins hands down.

Tbh the one I sat side by side was just a random tungsten, I find they get worse as the day goes by when ground by hand haha, when I was messing around welding tin foil and razor blades I found it was all about the grind (given a grove on the tungsten is like a grain of sand in the grand canyon to an electron), the better the grind the more stable the arc at low amps, but we all know that so extra care is taken in prep for such a job, i.e a smooth sharp tungsten helps no end, the Hudmut grinder is a great bit of kit, its key points are ease and consistency, like you I don't mind the bench grinder at all but once spoilt with a dedicated system your not so willing to go back to the old way.

keep half a dozen ready sharp sitting on the bench when welding...nobody wants to keep running the grinder when using the welder.End of welding session sharpen the tungstens as a matter of duty for next time. but ime sure you all know this and do it anyway
