Tung oil and mahogony?

So, I've been chopping wood and turned a load of these -

Into these -

I've got one bad joint, which I'm not certain what I'm going to do with, but all the rest are pretty good -

Anyway, in the context of the starting material, I'm pretty pleased.


But, for my question -

What's the situation with oil?

Is it just a single application, Matt finish? Or are you supposed to build layers, buffing etc?

I'm not sure I want a glossy finish anyway, but wondering?

Oil it's about penetration rather than layers
3 coats is pretty standard across the various oils allowing time for absorbsion

I have just done a bit of iroko with teak oil.
No idea if its correct or not but I did it like this
Sand off da with 240g
Wipe over with turps and leave to dry
Teak oil on a sponge and saturate the surface with it
Leave 24hrs
Wipe off the sticky residue with ipa on kitchen roll
Teak oil on a cloth quick wipe over just so it shines.
Leave 12hrs and repeat.
Finished last night, wiped off with ipa again this morning and it's just had an hour in the sun.
It's now dry and not sticky to touch.

I like and use Osmo Door Oil. No drying as such, does not leave a sticky surface, water resistant but not to be used outdoors.

Use a 600 grit wet and dry.
The make a "Rubber" to apply the oil. Like a French polish rubber.

Let dry, wipe excess off. Key will fine wire wool.

Apply light coat, let dry. wipe excess off and apply as many coats as you want.


End grain.

Support the wood so the end grain is vertical. Using a soft brush "drizzle" the oil in. Don't drag the oil. Let it drizzle and natualy soak in.

The dry, wipe etc.

Last coat.

Extra fine wire wool, remove any nibs and dust.

Then buff, old cotton T shirt work fine.

Step back, enjoy have a drink.
