I'm a complete novice to welding but thinking about signing up to a level 1 introduction course in MIG welding. I've read a few threads on the forum, the general consensus seems to be that whilst the courses are good there is nothing as good as practical experience. With that being said does anyone know of any one to one tutoring available in the Manchester area?

No, but nowadays YouTube with its wealth of advice and this forum, beats the Open University hands down.
Welcome to the forum.
If you get really stuck, someone will be available fairly locally I'd imagine.
But honestly, buy some second hand kit, give it a go, practice, post your results, there's a lot of us on here who have learnt like that, me included.
Tons of feedback and helpful advice on here for 'all' your problems.

Have a look at your local collages, as many do courses.
Ask at your job centre they may tell you what course are available, if you were to mention you may be looking for a new job.

Whilst experience is all good, you still need to know whether you're on the right tracks - as you may find yourself heading down a rabbit hole.
For TIG welding (perhaps moreso than MIG..?) technique is something that a college course can really help with; it did for me. Two and a half years ago I did an evening course at the local college; £250 for a dozen three-hour sessions. I'd argue that there is more knowledge needed for TIG and it really helped with my understanding of the process, I met others in a similar position and infinite steel blanks with which to practice. It was money well spent for me; I'd have done the MIG course last year too but world events got in the way!

I'm tempted to try to find a local college course on MiG Welding myself
I'm "having a go" but dived straight in and was welding my Van for MoT - not ideal to be "trial and error" on something "real" and not a practice piece. I think some tuition would ramp up my learning curve. I can "glue stuff together" with my Clarke Hobby Gasless welder (which to be fair works well and is no hassle ref gas bottles etc and I do weld outside) - but I'd like to be neater and tidier and just better .

Myerscough college did/do welding courses. I did a starter course then followed on to the next course where you did your own project there with an instructor giving you advice but at being just north of Jnc 32 on the M6 may a bit far for you to travel.
Main thing is if you have not yet bought a welder seek advice here before you buy something thats either rubbish or not suitable for your needs.
