Trying to buy a cordless angle grinder...

i have the ryobi one quite poor on the battery will only grind out a 4-5 ft channel before needs recharging again

got all the lot for 35.00 but i bought it to go with another 2 batterys for the battery drill so only cost me 20.00 for the grinder bare bone ( no battery )

I have the Screwfix Hitachi. Good value I reckon.

£270 ish for the grinder and 2 X 5 ah batteries? Not bad actually as the big batteries are a must with the cordless grinders imo.

You can see how much fun it is, google didn't throw up half of those, or probably did but on page five and only after you've entirely lost the will to live. I can't see much difference between bosch, hitachi and makita really, but it'll be one of those anyway. I really don't have space for a genny and inverter, its just more tat, and I have a medium sized oxy set which is again too big to be practical lugging it into the car. Our yard used to give you one free cut on 6 metre lengths but have stopped doing that and now add a labour charge instead. The labour charge can be as much or more than the cost of the steel, its a complete pain. I wouldn't mind paying for exact cuts to particular lengths but this is nonsense. Far better to whip out a cordless and have a twenty quid bill for a bundle of steel!

I also find that when I'm really busy, the cord on my bosch 4 1/2" is brilliant at getting tangled with everything else on my bench, or itself if there's nothing else for it to get caught up on...

My Makita is good for small odd jobs but as said will never beat a mains powered. 5ah batteries transform the tool over 3ah

I used to trim horses hooves with an angle grinder using an inverter off my vans battery ! An eBay inverter with a £9.99 angle grinder is the way to go for cutting up steel at the steel yard.

Ye gods, I've trimmed a lot of horses hooves, but with a grinder? A good sharp nicholson rasp every time for me, they come out flat every time and the horse doesn't drag you round the stall trying to escape!

Yeah, now I've got some sensible options I think I'll definitely go for a 5ah battery.

Yeah I'd go for the biggest batteries you can (4ah minimum imo) and if you get 2 so much the better.

To be honest, I doubt I'll need it. It depends just how useful it is on my bench and whether I end up reaching for it in preference to the others, which I suspect I will. I try to keep my bench as clear as I can so not having leads trailing across it sounds like a bonus to me..

Milwaukee with 4A bat
And dewalt with 4A bat
Use them both for my hydraulic hose business, cutting hoses when mobile in the field.

I do realise it would only take a minute or so to cut a few bits of steel likely to be in long lengths ...just intrigued.

Mates old horse (30+) who didn't flinch one bit. It was for barefoot profiling.

Daughter left home and left a horse here! It is old, I feed it! I take it for a walk down the lane with the dog (neither needs a lead).

But I would not take a grinder to it's hooves. We have a farrier to trim it's feet!

To be kind to horse and make sure it has the correct gait, trimming hooves is best left to a professional. Under the Farriers Act of 1975 it is legal to trim horse hooves if they are bare foot. But it is illegal to trim then shoe if not a registered Farrier.

I leave the job to a Farrier as I don't want a lame horse for my evening walk.

I've got an 18v Dewalt, I've got spare batteries due to have other kit. It's an old NiMH one and it's really useful. I think the mistake many people do it compare them to corded. They are not designed for heavy use they are design for convenience. With a thin disc they cut well and are great for buzzing things up with a flap disc. Don't expect them to run for hours though. It has got me out of trouble so many times where I didn't have time to run an extension cable or I just need to do a quick job. I wouldn't be without one now. You need to be aware that if you were cutting large metal stock to fit your car you could end up going through 2-3 batteries.

Cheapest way to get one is to either a small kit that has one or buy a drill kit which are often on specials with a couple of batteries and charger then buy a bare unit to suit.

A bare 18V Ryobi grinder is £64 and you can get a drill with 2 batteries and a charger for £98 in B&Q, sure they aren't same as the big players but at that money they good value

you can get them cheaper as places sell them to get rid of them thats how i got mine at 20.00 brand new barebone grinder i had 2 batterys to use but come across a battery and a charger for 14.00 so bought that one
but ryobi have a problem there charges can fail and they refuse to charge as we had a brand new one last xmas and it failed just after refused to charge the batterys charger had gained a fault ryobi did fix it

also ryobi quote that there drills are for diyers not professional use as what was quoted on the drill that was bought new

im now left with one battery and grinder + charger
