Thanks for all the advice. The flow meter I bought (fits on the torch) indicated I was using 20 litres/minute, which might explain why I have been getting through so much gas.
I tried again, this time with a gas lens, the correct flow rate, and I cleaned the black oxidation off of the tungstens the resulted in a much cleaner weld and I also found I could also run over the weld several times. Result
All I need to do now is work out how join pieces that are significantly different in thickness without destroying the thinner piece.
